Well, another thread got me going on Peanuts again. Here's the scoop: I tried one a while back, but the nail nick was so darn shallow/small that I didn't feel safe opening it. It seems to me that it had half-stops too, and a pretty darn good snap - which combined with the lousy nail nicks made it really uncomfortable (read scary ;)) to open with my 60+ year old hands.

So, are all Peanuts this way - lousy nail nicks? Do they all have half-stops, which I don't particularly care for on a knife this small? As I said in the other thread, I'd really like to carry a Peanut as a way to honor our good friend jackknife and his father. I'm going to carry some small fella in my watchpocket anyway, so it may as well be a Peanut - I just don't want to risk, maybe not life, but limb in doing so! :D

Talk to me about your Peanuts!

I'm thinking that if you get a single blade peanut you "may" be able to pinch it open.
Just a thought...(I can pinch open the one I have but if my fingers were wet or slippery it'd be tough without the nick.)

Can't address peanuts directly on this, but I have found that a particular Case pattern can vary quite a bit in the depth of nail nicks. Those made at different times or different eras, or whether the blades are CV or SS, or maybe just at random. So some searching may be in order.

I think that Case, like a lot of companies that produce large numbers of things, may have some variance in specs. Both my chestnut bone peanut and bone stag have a nail nick that is a little shallow. But my yellow peanut has a nick that is notably deeper struck. Accident? Then I have to wonder which one is the accident, the shallow ones or the deep struck yella 'nut?

Yet another good reason to find a ma and pa brick and morter store to handle before buying.

If you know someone with a reeeal steady hand with a Dremel tool...

Yet another reason why I find in my old age, I like my old yella soddie junior.

Carl.

The Case peanuts with the "as ground" finish have deeper and crisper nail nicks than the tumbled/ polished blades. The black G10 and brown delrin current production 'nuts have the "as ground" finish. I recommend the black G10.

All Case peanuts have half-stops, I believe.

     ..... OMG Elliott!!! Do you think Carl's dad carried a single blade peanut? Do you think Carl carries a single blade peanut? The nerve of some people ..... ;) :D

I do like the way you think outside the box, though!

Just kiddin' on that first line  ..... a single blader may not be a bad idea - in fact, it may be a great idea for an old geezer like me! ;)

I LOVE that "as ground" finish on a knife, specially on the brown jigged delrin "working" series of knives. I don't know, there's just something "utilitarian" about these knives. I guess that's why they call them their "Working" series.

If you can entertain other brands of peanut, then Queen's, Schrade's (get a USA made one), or a good used one with a long pull. Like the one Vince gifted me (in a give away) last week. I'm not real fond of Case's current nick configuration on their peanuts.

The nail nicks on my Peanuts are fine, but I have had that problem with one of my Mini Trappers.

I always find the small pen blade hard to open on my Peanuts, which is a pity as I'd like to use the pen most of the time and save the clip for bigger cutting jobs.

I can't comment on Carl's dad since they were carrying chipped obsidian and flint knives back in his time...;)

...but Carl has more than once openly coveted my little single blade peanut. I'm just sayin'...

:D

You might try a Schrade Peanut the nail nick is a little longer. I like the older ones the best

Oler ones. I have a Camillus #21 and its easy to open with deep nail nice too.

i dont have any issues with opening a schrade usa peanut by pinching the blade. mine dont have a half-stop. on the case and colt models which have a stop, this becomes an issue. try an older schrade and im sure you'll be happy. by the way way my fingernails are chewed to the bone so i know a few things about opening a slippie without using a nail nick.:D

I used to do this with an Old TImer 12OT (I think they are). It's their version of the peanut.

I was going to recommend the 12OT as a great option for anyone looking for a single blade, peanut-style knife.

A small Toothpick 3" big is very pinchable
Queen City put one out in Delrin and carbon

+1 - I love mine. I guess the proper pattern description would be a "single-blade micro trapper"?

Moore Maker has a single blade peanut as well. I think Queen makes 'em. :)

Good tip. I'm not crazy about the pink, but this one might be nice in the white bone version. Do you guys know if the shields on Moore Makers of this stripe are pinned on, or glued?

Thanks for all the suggestions, fellas!

I just pulled the trigger on a Case Chestnut Bone CV Peanut. The seller had pics of the actual knife and the nail nicks look pretty good - we'll see. If not, I'll get a Dremel, and after practicing on scraps of steel and maybe a couple older knives that I don't really care much about, I'll get some usable nail nicks on it - one way or another!

I haven't had Case Chestnut Bone before , and thought it was high time to fix that. From comments and pics around here it seems to be a very well liked handle color/material!
