i recently started up making knives again. I am so pissed right now. I spent last night and a bit of thgis morning working on a hidden tang handle ( again) and i just f--it up. Man what is wrong with my hands. They are doing everything wrong. I think i need to slow way down. - venting--thanks mark
 
Step back, deep breath with focus on calming the f--k down :D, and go back to it always helps for me.

Anyone who's never messed up a knife is either extremely lucky, or lying. Take a break, have a beverage, and try to learn from the mistake.

Believe me bro, I've thrown away more steel than I've sold. But with patience, I'm getting better. Hang in there!
 
Try to do any job in little steps. Sneak up on the final shape/finish, don't rush into it. If there are things on your mind, you can't concentrate properly. Get rid of distractions, leave the day job at the front door, and let your mind be fully engaged. It probably doesn't need saying in your case, but for the benefit of others....Alcohol, drugs, kids, etc. don't mix well with shop work on knives.

When things aren't going right,take a break. Let your head clear, and try and figure out what is going wrong when you take a fresh look at the knife.

thanks yall, its true when im down stairs i have my kid,work,lawncare,housework,my wife and up coming events all rolling through my mind. The added pressure of my wife complaining that i need to spend more time with her puts me in a very rushed mode. i quess if it takes me a month to do a knife atleast it will be done better. I really need to go down there and just concentrate even if its for 15-30 minutes a day. I end up in a rush, my shop gets disorginized and dirty and i just push things out of the way to make room for whatever im doing. thanks for listening- marekz. if i could i would be down there all day.

NOT making fun of you - but I think any one who has made knives a bit.

Can say - Been there, done that..... :D:rolleyes:

When I first started making folders, (and this is after making knives 25 years)
I would have a knife almost done, just to wreck it....:mad:

Talk about blowing a gasket???? :rolleyes::D

Keep going, you will get there.
Time is the key to a great knife.

My teacher always reminds me that if you approach your work with a trashed mind that's what you'll get as a result. I almost always start my time in the shop by cleaning up and sweeping. It helps me relax and set the correct frame of mind. Course I'm a Japanese redneck and this might not work for you crackers. :)

Mine is a box. About once every six months I'll go through the box and look at all my fk ups. Every once in a while I find one that I now know how to fix. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen from time to time.

I use the box as reminders of the things that I've learned over the years, because some of the mistakes that I find in there make me feel good years later, because they are mistakes that I no longer make!
 
When I step into the shop I start with a prayer. It has always help me get thinking the right way. For its with him my help comes from. :)

:mad: Although this is my first knife, Is this what you mean when you throw them in the bucket ? I decided to finish it anyway and use it for patina finish experiments and its the first knife heat treated by me under the watchful eye of my mentor. Although this situation definatly tastes like a shitsandwich I tried to hold my nose and chow it down. :D
