peel-Ply vs G-10

Can someone explain the differences between these 2 handle materials? The normal Cf material suffers from being slick to the touch but the texture of the peel ply cf addresses that issue. So with that in mind what are the differences in these 2 handle materials that would play into the use of one over the other?

Thanks in advance!

I just recieved a CF Military as of yesterday, and have already written a thread promoting the CF Military, and the peel-ply carbon fiber which makes it so effective.

Peel-ply is undoubtedly in my opinion, the most grippiest medium I have felt on a knife, and even to the point that I think it outshines the popular G10, in all aspects.

It is absolutely more aesthetically attractive, and more visually appealing to the eye, and yet it is just that little bit more grippy, I feel, than G10.

The only negative aspect, may be that it might be too pretty, to use, and use hard,.... and in the end is more expensive to manufacture, thus it is incorporated into limited edition models, rather than general production knives.

Ultimately, I personally would choose my CF Military, over my G10, in a heartbeat. And with a classic Spyderco workhorse that is the Military, I would be more confident in using my CF Milie, in any scenario, and simply because it is the exact same blade as the general Military, only with a more attractive, and grippy handle,...... so what else is there to compare ???

It is the same Spyderco Military......, only a little more "pimped out" , so to speak.

Peel-ply carbon fiber is the sh*t, yet I will always love G10 for its general properties, and it's understated, yet at the same time, perfect look........ That is why it is the best material for your regular production knife.
Peel-ply is just a classier material for a special, limited production knife...... and it's SWEET!!!!! :D

I found out that difference in weight is 1g less for CF Military. Also it looks like scales is just a little bit thicker - CF Milly 1mm thicker overall. It has chess pattern which looks and feel nicer, but I bet it is due to the way fiber was layed down and probably same pattern can be achived by glass fiber in G10.

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. This CF not slick at all, same as G10 at least, may be just a bit grippy.

PPCF vs G10 (note that Spyderco uses custom G10 which is better than the run of the mill stuff)

1. Superior stiffness = less handle flex (a key issue in an unlined design)
2. Surface texture feels better in hand
3. Looks better

The texture and pattern of the PPCF on my Millie is identical to the G10 on my Manix. Peel-ply simply means a layer (or ply) of Dacron or nylon fabric is laid as the top layer when the composite is made. That sheet is peeled off when the epoxy sets, leaving the pattern of the fabric on the surface of the composite. I wouldn't be surprised if Spyderco's G10 is peel-ply as well.

The biggest difference I feel is not the surface of the PPCF vs. G10, it's the edges of the handle slabs. The PPCF edges are grippy while the G10 edges are pretty smooth. This alone makes a noticeable difference in the feel of the two handle materials, much more so than the flat surface texture.
