Peen SAK without the bushings for thinner model?

What purpose do the bushings on a SAK serve, other than providing an attachment point for the scales?

I would like to make my SAK (cellidor recruit) as thin as possible, preferably almost as thin as its alox cadet version. I am thinking I could remove the scales and bushings, and peen the brass pin straight onto the scale (so it's flatter), then glue very thin wood scales on top (with appropriately placed indents).

Any ideas whether the bushings can simply be left out?

I could also insert the pins through the wood scales, and peen directly onto the extremely thin wood layer. I've seen this in many examples, but always with quite thick wood scales. I am worried about the thinness of the wood causing some sort of problem. I suppose I could try to source some very thin g10, micarta, etc. instead.
