When I peen my bolster to the knife and after I grind down the bolster and fit the handle, when all is said and done you can see where the pins are in the bolster. How do I avoid this. I am also self taught so maybe I am not peening correctly. HELP

Thanks,
Joe

One thing you can do is make sure you sand side of pin to keep any gunk from showing. Knife and Gun Supplysell a tapered reamer in 3/32 or 1/8 which helps. Second don't make you pins too tall above the bolster or they will be hard to spread to fill the hole. I grind the end of the pin to heat it a little to soften. I use a pin press but it also works okay by hand just be gentle when you peen. Polishing the ball peen end of a hammer makes it easier to get the pin material to spread. Last then I have it spread I pop it pretty hard with the flat end to make sure it fills the cavity. Mike
