Are pelican cases a viable long term storage solution for carbon steel knives (i.e. are they prone to rusting if kept in one for weeks-months at a time, after being rubbed with oil first)?

you would need to have some type of moisture absorber, potentially an oxygen absorber, and ensuring that nothing in the case is giving off any corrosives (acetate and celluloid are two things off the top of my head)

A wax or grease would also likely be a better choice than oil as they stay in place rather than migrate or evaporate off the steel.

I'm sure someone where has done it and can describe their method and success, but those were just the factors that I can come up with off the top of my head.

VPI , vapor phase inhibitor paper is available .Wrap the knife in that .
RIG, Rust inhibiting grease is a good one .
There are other special chemicals that will work too but I don't remember them offhand.
The moisture absorber is a good idea as moisture condensation on the metal has damaged many knives , guns and tools !

I always save the little silica packs that come in literally everything and put them in the safe, tool boxes, drawers that hold gear and tools etc.

I know that the foam in these cases cause spotting for bolsters (that comes off though) so whatever you do don't just stick you knife in for long periods without checking out.

Also, replace or recharge your desiccant regularly. They fill up with moisture and either need to be dried out (the reusable ones) or replaced regularly depending on your environment.

It's been a few years... how did this work out for you?
Someone ended up recommending the Maxpedition Razorshell R14 and I've used that to great success when I've had to put the blade in question in storage; I usually have been using a bit of Renaissance Wax to protect the blade
