The recent pen topics got me in the mood for a pen review.
Total cost: $39.95 for the pen plus $5 for a Pelikan converter.
Appearance -- The Technixx comes in three different finished. Blue, black and chrome. I opted for the blue color and I was glad I did when I first pulled the pen from its packaging. It's a very attractive color. To me the pen in hand seems a darker blue than what is presented on websites. The clip and trim are all a silver/chrome finish. The clip is different, but it works with the overall more modern styling of the pen.
Design/Size/Weight -- What I noticed first was how thin the pen is overall. The cap is not much wider than the barrel of the pen. I could see it's width being a problem for users with bigger hands, but for me it fits well. On my scale the overall weight comes in at 1 oz. The length unposted is about 5.5 inches and when posted it comes in around 6.25 inches. My the only thing that irks me is I prefer screw on caps when I can get them, but many cheaper fountain pens come without them. Not a huge deal with a $40 fountain pen. The clip does have a small spring which keeps tension on the clip rather than just a bent piece of metal like many pens have. The barrel and cap is made out of aluminum and brass. The finish is very nice to the touch.
Nib -- I went with a medium sized nib. Nib construction is just stainless steel with the Pelikan logo set into the face of the nib. Despite the nibs very plain appearance this cheap little pen is a writer. Probably the best writer I have owned around the $40 price point. Very reliable with no skipping and smooth as butter right out of the box.
Filling system -- The Technixx can use standard cartridges or a piston fill converter. Filling is easiest if you dip most of the nib in ink.
Overall thoughts -- This $40 Pelikan Technixx is proof that you don't have to spend a lot of money for a good little writer. It's modern styling might be a turn off for some which is understandable in the world of fountain pens. It's small width could be a problem for users with large hands, but it's all personal preference. I am completely happy with the purchase, and have been using the pen daily since purchase. At this price with the performance it offers it well deserves to wear the Pelikan name.
