Hello all, I am in need of some pen advice. I have a brass hinderer investigator that I've carried daily for the past 3 years. It's a fine pen but I have a couple complaints about it. First it is a little small for my large hands and secondly the grooves are a little sharp. I am also not in love with the blotchy fisher refills. Those things make the pen uncomfortable for extended use. So I am looking at a pen upgrade. Here are some pens I am looking at.

While the Investigator is too small the Hinderer Extreme Duty is too big, and I don't like the way the end sticks out of the pocket.

I like the looks of the Prometheus writes pen and am really intrigued by the Mont Blanc Refills but its really expensive.

Fellhoelter ti-bolt. It seems well made and well regarded and fairly affordable for an all titanium pen but I am not sure about not having a low-rider clip. And even though its faster to use for a quick note, I prefer a cap on my pen.

Matthew Martin cap pen. This seems to be the one I am most interested in as its a little bigger than the investigator but not as big as the E.D. Its also not nearly as expensive as the prometheus writes. Plus it gives me some options to use parker refills. My question is, is it big enough to justify spending the extra money. I have seen the martin and investigator comparison shots with caps on, but does anyone have a picture of them next to each other with the caps screwed on the back so I can see the difference of in hand writing length?

Also if you have any advice about he pens listed above or another recommendation please feel free to chime in.

Thanks.

A couple other things I probably should have mentioned. I really prefer Titanium and It has to have a red ink refill (teacher here) I don't know if the schmidt easyflow has a red ink option.

I have the Prometheus, TiBold and Aluminum Render K. I hate to say it, but I like all of them - LOL

In hand (for writing) the Prometheus and Render K feel best to me. Don't get me wrong, the TiBolt writes very well, but it just feels a bit heavy in hand compared to the other ones.

I don't particularly like the clip on the TiBolt, especially when I ride thicker shorts/pants. Like you, I also prefer caps on my pens, reason why I favor the Prometheus and Render K. The clip on the Prometheus is nice, but not as secure as the Render k and TiBolt. The tension on mine is pretty weak actually.

I think you would really prefer the Prometheus over the TiBolt.

Parker makes/made a slew of ball point pens in many materials. Some have a button activator, some a sliding cap, and some a twisting cap. The refill choices are wide ranging. I have Parker B/P's in Stainless, Silver, Gold, Gold plate, Titanium, and plastic. Google Parker 51, 61, 75, and Jotter B/P's.

Does anyone have a comparison/ opinion of the Investigator vs Martin cap pen. I would love to see a picture of the pens compared with caps on the back side to see the difference in length while open.

I can't solve your issues with the pen itself, but if you want a smooth writing Fisher refill, get a fine point. That cures the blobbing issues you're experiencing with medium points. Trust me, it's a night and day difference. Most office supply stores don't stock them, so you'll likely have to order online, though.

I like the Rite in the Rain steel clicker pen. Not fancy but writes well and is all metal construction. Probably in a different class than the ones you're looking at but still pretty nice.

Probably not what you're looking for but it's short, fat, durable, and takes the Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 refill. I could swear that I saw some red Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 refills somewhere but I don't remember where I saw them.

Boker Plus .50 Cal. K.I.D. bolt action pen:

I don't know if you are interested in any other pens than specified here, however, Big Idea Design produces a fantastic titanium pen and it can use the red pilot refills.
