I currently use Uniball 207 Gel pens to write in my various journals. But as I am writing more and more these days I am getting tired of the accidental smears that make the page look all messy. I notice that my Fisher Space Pen does the job, but they are 10+ dollars a pop. Anyone have an alternative, something that write basically dry and doesn't smear easily? Wanting to spend less than $3 a pop.

A pencil.

Seriously though, its going to be more a combination between your ink and paper. I write quite a bit, and with foutain pens, I know which combos I like for certain tasks. Notes need fine nib, quick drying ink and sturdy paper. Letters, I use higher quality paper and heavier inks.

Some of the rollerball pens can actually be refilled with fountainpen inks. I like schneider ink or vintage Skrip #32 (Parker Quink too) for quick drying. For ball point, I like the spacepen refills in a modifed Zebra F-701.

Damn, that was pretty good.

They see my trollin, they hatin............

I wasn't trolling. I write with my left hand and this has been a lifelong problem for me. Even when writing in pencil. My "sloppy" homework was mentioned by more than one teacher during conferences growing up. So it was curiosity of a possible solution that brought me here. Sorry I can't help. I am glad to see some suggestions. This really is a primarily left handed problem in my experience.

Edited to add: I felt a lefty should make the comment.

Space pen refills are $5 each, or a bit less if you buy multiples. But personally I find that they blob too much. And doing a quick "smear test" with a few various ball-point pens I have lying around, it smears much more than others, including Zebra (the F701 is a favorite) and the classic cheap Bic (worked for Elmore Leonard).
