Pen Knife VS GB Mini

I need to post some pics on this later but yesterday just for fun I took my GB mini and my Pen Knife out to a tree that fell behind my barn.

I remember Yvsa talking about reviews and how that we should put how long it took us to do the chopping and how many chops and all that. I didn't have anyone to time me but I did try to count most of the chopping.

What I found was weird to me, and if any of y'all have both maybe you could try it and see.

I found that the GB mini blade penetrated farther and cut better at the beginning of the cutting of something fairly thick, but that once you were down in the notch the Pen Knife seemed to be able to cut down in that narrow area, or cut the sides and expand the narrow area easier.

I found the GB seemed to cut stuff 1" or so better than the Pen Knife cause it cut deeper. When I say better I mean less like 2 vs 3 swings.

When I was cutting stuff 1/2" or so the pen knife seemed to cut better than the GB. Probably cause of the machete like shape.

Also it seemed like the GB seemed to not remain as keen edged as the pen knife. Now it may not be the hardening, cause the GB has the stock edge and the Pen Knife I have done a lot of work on to get it just right.

Generally they were very closely matched. But on stuff say 3" or thicker I found the Pen Knife tended to beat the GB by about 3 to 5 strokes to get thru the same stuff. Also despite the small handle many of us talk about, the GB was a little harder on my palm than the Pen Knife.

In conclusion I think the Pen Knife is as good at chopping and more all around than the GB mini. It is a few ounces heavier but not enough to make that a consideration. My main problem is the sheath. The sheath adds so much weight compared to just the thin axe head cover on the GB that even with the Pen Knife being slightly better the GB wins out on the pack.

I am going to try to see if I can find someone who can make a thin kydex sheath for it and take it instead of the GB though, cause it is a better overall chopper.

a thin kydex sheath would be easy to make...and a good addition to the Pen Knife.

Wish we could send some kydex to Nepal....wonder what they'd think of it...I know they'd like it...because it's easier than building a scabbard...but I don't think they'd ever give up the scabbard...maybe they could use it for certain smaller knives only.

Dang....gotta thing about that one now...

Ok, back to the review....Fascinating, and well done. Thanks for posting it.
Can you get a pic of the two side by side?

Dan,

Interested in trying to make a Kydex sheath for me?? ;)

I got pix side by side but it will be this evening before I can post them and link them here cause I can't do it at work!

I've got a new kydex product I want to try out....might be worth the fun...shoot me an email (to my pend. acct)

HD, thanks for posting that review. :) I love reading what people think about Khukuris, specially when it comes to Khukuris VS other choppers. Can't wait to see the pics. Did you get any pics of the wood you cut?

A quick draw leather sheath out of 8/9oz leather is pretty light. ;) And for something the size of the pen knife would be pretty easy to make... Been itching to make some more Khukuri sheaths. If you are interested..

Wildmanh,

I want to send you my Ganga for a leather sheath but I want to try to go for a kydex cause of weight for this Pen knife since I'm going to use it for backpacking.

I guess he wouldn't mind me sharing this, if he does he can cuss me ;) But a while back Rio Jim posted those sheath pics and I was talking to him via e mail about sheaths and sheath weight. He was so very cool as to send me an e mail where he weighed all these khuks of his and the various sheaths, leather, standard and kydex. It was a really great e mail and maybe if he wants to he can share it but to give you the "Readers Digest" version, he said the leather one saves you a few ozs but the kydex saves more.

HD, very interesting information. IF Kydex is lighter, it probably would be better for back packing...As for the Ganga Ram sheath... I have a nice Big piece of leather set aside for a Khukuri sheath, if you are ever interested. :) Just email me..

Would love to get my hands on that email. The more I can learn about sheathing, the better.:)

HD, those are some really nice pics. Thanks for sharing. :) Is that a Sisco cover on the sheath? :D

Heber

P.S. You have email.

It's a Sisco overall. Sheath has a tinder pouch built on it. Frog has sheath for a chakma made from some antler I sent Terry and a Brusselletto blade. Chakma is antler with diamond stick. Cover is hemp. It's a cool sheath. I don't use it that much though cause the loop is a little too long so the sheath doesn't stay close to the body and swings too much when walking.
