Does any one here have thoughts on the pen knife in the specialty section of the site?
I like the look and size and shape of this little piece.

WOW, I feel like my eyes are going to bleed that was one hell of a read, but I think I like it.
Though it sounds like the handle is a little weak as there are a few cracks in it, and the blade sounds like it should need sharpened.
Were the handles ever made bigger lile ppl though they should have been?
Is the edge now fully sharpened?
Thanks for a great link man.

The pen knife was sort of a special project. Uncle Bill still gets them in from time to time, so send him an e-mail indicating your desire to own a pen knife.

I didn't go to the linked thread but it sounds like it was a blem for sale. Sort of like a factory second. (Oops it wasn't a blem thread. The link was for the original pen knife review. However, if you do get a blem...) :footinmou

Generally the bigger the knife, the bigger the handle. Dunno why, but it just seems to be like that.

You might want to wait for Monday for Uncle Bill is back. He said he's gonna have a sale, and when Uncle Bill has a sale :D :D

The Pen knife is a great little knife. I like it because it puts a lot of chopping power in a compact package. The handle is a bit small, which I doubt has been changed, but it's easy to work with. (Although it's easier to figure out the best hand position if you've had experience with some of the larger khuks that have bigger handles).

Regarding the blade sharpness, and handle cracks - being handmade, HI's have some variability. Some of my khuks have come with a pretty decent edge, while others have required some work - usually about 10 or 20 minutes on a stone will give you a good working edge (though it depends a bit on your sharpening skill and equipment). If you're going to use them, the edge won't stay razor-like and you'll need to sharpen them at some point anyway.

Superficial handle cracks can be a problem. Going from different climates, including changes in temperature and humidity, natural horn often expands or contracts. Most guys treat the horn with Hooflex, or some sort of lanolin-based product to help prevent this. The horn is still pretty tough, and I haven't seen any HI khuks where a few shallow cracks threaten the integrity of the handle. That's not to say that horn cracks are inevitable - it's fairly common, especially if you get a "blem" , but not 100%. Also, I haven't had any cracks in my wood handles.

True, they don't come as sharp or cosmetically perfect as some factory knives, but they've been halfway around the world and come with a little handmade magic. HI khuks definitely get the job done.

It might be Tue or Wed before any sales. IIRC UB said in one of his last posts that he would be getting into Reno Mon NIGHT. Maybe Tues to rest up and sort out the sale items.

Of course, we will all be monitoring pretty close. :D

And welcome to the Cantina. ( Named after the bar scene in the first Star Wars.) Just about everyone no matter how odd is welcome as long as you pay others a little respect.

Think of us as a home away from home where everyone packs a hideaway gun and a knife or two - and is polite for that reason.

I wonder sometimes if I didn't drop the ball on this one. But, I had just been sent a beautiful present that to me is the working knife for the average country fella. I use my small knives almost every day for something. Maybe I'm just getting touchy in my old age. I felt that all of a sudden every body was selling the 12" AK short.
Mine was a gift and is just about neck and neck with a couple others for top gun around South Central Texas. I have no trouble with small limb pruning, slicing veggies or meat in the kitchen and it stays sharp with little effort to carve in my little shop sometimes. For smaller projects it makes a very good draw knife.

That Bura made little bugger is just about all the knife I need most of the time. The Bilton fills the gap on the small side and the 15" AK or the 16.5" WWII catches the bigger stuff. From the 21" GS the 20" kobra and Siru and all the others that sit patiently waiting their turn to shine. They are all icing on the cake. I hope that the Pen knife does all that folks want that have one. Till some one shows me that it will do more than the toys that I already have I'll stay a happy dude.

LCS I still thank you from the bottom of my country boy heart.:) :D
