Pen knife??

I've been eyeing one of these pen knives lately. How do they compare chopping-wise to khuks similar in size like the 12" AK?

For me, the PK bites a bit deeper. However, it doesn't remove the chips like a 12" AK. The PK usually comes in around 3/16"-1/4" in spine width. Pretty thin as far as HI khuks go.

It's going to boil down to what you like. I have both. For the longest time, the PK was my go to khuk when it came to camping. It probably still is. However, I have a great little 13" AK that I snagged a few months ago that will outchop it. I'd say, GET BOTH!:D You gotta have different khuls for different moods. Do you have any idea how many pairs of shoes my wife has for just this reason?;)

For me, the 12" pen is a little easier to chop with vs. my 12" AK. But I've modded mine with a stacked leather handle with makes it more comfortable to use. I've left the AK a little more traditional only taking off the sharp corners for comfort.

My pen knife also chops better than my 12" AK.

On the other hand I HAVE handled 12" AK's that seemed to feel like more of a chopper than my Pen Knife.

The main drawback to both designs IMO, that Aliloff mentioned was the handles on them are a bit too short.

That's my main complaint with anything below 15" is a lot of times they make the handle to look proportional to the blade and it ends up being a bit too short.

Seems like when you get to 16" or above the handles are long enough.

I have always wondered what a 13" BGRS would chop like. I've always liked the blade shape for chopping. If the Kamis ever make a BGRS that size, I'd definetly have to get my hands on one just to see. I could always modify the handle to give it a little more room.

I agree. I'd love to see one as long as the handle was decent sized:thumbup:

By decent size meaning around 4 1/2 inches? Because I tend to grip most khuks closer to the blade with my thumb on top of the bolster and my index and middle finger tight enough to allow it to rock. I get more snap that way and the ring and pinky finger only tighten just before the end of the snap. So I do mind the smaller handle as much as most.

Aliloff,

Yes! I do the same thing. My only problem is a fat short handle is harder to do that with (for me) than a narrow short handle.

I can tell you both that a great compromise is the seldom seen 15" BGRS at 20 oz. In that size they are always villagers by Sher*. Razor sharp, just 4 oz. over a pound, and not too common. Actually, I know you have one Hollow, as I saw it pictured above your new 15" chitlangi!

The pen knives are very useful. I don't know what it is, but I've never cared for the 12" sirus or AK's and sold them off. I have a 12" chit though.

The 15" BGRS has a 5" long handle and 10" blade, but because of the position of the ring your hand is forced back on the sharp pommel.

The handle problems can be fixed a bit by sanding down the ring, which always seems to be too far back on the short handles, and then sanding down the top of the handle a little so it doesn't poke you as much if you have large hands.

The 12" pen is such a useful all around knife that it's worth it to spend some time on the handle if you find it too short.

In restrospect, I think that perhaps the 14" BDC is the best HI has in a combination of compact size and useful power. No handle issues with that model either.

*I stand corrected. Since I've been gone for a while I've done some searching and seen a couple by Dil. Maybe they are being made regularly again?

Bura Dui Chirra, AKA Baby Dui Chirra. First ones (very few) came in at 10.5 to 11", while most were made in the 14" range. Later 18" models were made available.

Excellent ergonomics with a very comfortable handle. Do a search and you should find several pictures.

P.S. Here's one I took for a review I did a while back, showing all 3 sizes in chandan.

I'll have to see how the Pen compares to my BDC. Aliloff was kind enough to loan his to me. It is 2" shorter at 12".

The hacking post is due for a couple more hits this week.
