I had a bash at this today and got a sharpener from the dollar shop (Well, 100 yen shop) It has a little case built in so it collects the shavings. Have a gander.

I'm going to add a sharpener to my survival-kit as soon as I get home. :) I normally use birch-bark as my base tinder to start fires but this would be cool for evergreen forests.

What kind of wood did you use for the shavings?

Its a little conifer type thing that has survived the hottest summers here in Japan, I'm surprised its still alive considering its in a pot. It took 2 tries with the blastmatch. It absoluteely threw it down last night too. The car was clean this morning when i went outside so you can imagine how wet things must have been. It (the tree) had about 10 hours to dry in 20 deg temps, this part of course was already dead.

I've carried a True Center tapering tool for years. It's primarily an arrow building tool that's used to taper the nock and point ends of a wooden arrow shaft and because shafts come in a multitude of sizes, it handles diameters up to 3/8".

Yes, I remeber you(well, maybe not you specifically but Iremembered someoen had a tapering tool) saying that and I was looking for one of those older cast aluminium sharpeners that have two different apparture. 3/8 is about 9mm this one is only 5mm or so. Not such a huge issue as you can always shave /whittle one to fit, but still its nice to have the choice of larger stuff.

Temper,
Not to hijack or offend, but could tell me anything about the knife in the first pictures? It looks like it'd be great for wilderness excursions.

Not at all.

Its a DMKnives Drop Point. David Mosier is the maker you can find him here www.dmknives.com he lists stuff in the makers for sale section too although he rarely posts. He usually makes thing with a more tactical flavour to them, I think this was a one off. Well, actully he posted one for sale about a year ago. I loved it but wanted it about 1-1.5 bigger blade wise and he obliged. It took about 3 weeks from ordering it to it arriving on my door step in Japan. The secong I held it my face just lit up, its the most comfortable handle I have ever had (I have pretty small hands compared to my frame) It was about $160.00 IIRC. The Kydex sheath comes with three carry options by means of a removable belt loop (45 90 180 deg) although I just use the 45 for cross draw or what ever its called.

It holds an edge very well and due to the grind is still functional even when the sharpness isnt optimal any more. I dont know how hard it is ony bloody hard as a diamond lansky and the #2000 Super Sapphire have a hard time biting into it.

This is my default utility knife I have even split small logs with it and it just ripped through them and no damage to the thin edge. Of cousre I cant put it in a vice, attach a 100ft alu tube on it and balance an elephant at the other end but I wouldnt hesitate to reccomend it.

The big D2 Hurricane knife is going to accompany it on future trips into the bush. With these two I think I have all the cutting bases covered.

OAL : 202
Blade : 97 mm
Blade Material : S30V and Cryo treated by David
Handle Length : 105 mm Micarta, Brass pins and lanyard tube
Sheath: Kydex with 45 90 180 deg carry (Its tight as a crabs you know what too and has stayed that way. There is no way its falling out.)

Contact David about it, he's really easy to deal with.

Thanks, Temper. I didn;t mention it, but the ergos do look like thye'd fit my hands well. Thanks for the information. Off to increase the credt card bill. :)
