As the weather was wet today I decided to give the pencil sharpener technique another go and compare it to making shavings using a knife.

Typical wet West Coast day~

Anyway onto my test, first off I lit up the dry pencil sharpener shavings that I'd made in the bag, I then made and lit a fuzz stick using my Mark Wohlwend Bushcrafter.
As ya can see on the vid I have to give the edge to the Pencil Sharpener !

* If anyone has one of Marks knives and you'd like it exchanged for a Pitdog Pencil sharpener just contact me and we can sort the details out !;) *

Very interesting.
I would have thought the shavings from the
knife would have been finer,and
light up faster.
You think it was just because the pencil shavings were "dry"
compared to the stick shavings?

I have one of these brass ones I will add
to my fire kit

Hey pit have you ever tried using the pencil sharpener to get shavings off of a stick rather than a pencil? I would try it out but i am in a hotel...just arrived in Oklahoma this evening.

I have, with a carpenter's pencil sharpener. I can make tent stakes and shavings at the same time. Lowe's or Home Depot sell them, it cost me about $1.80, plastic body, but it will fit a larger pencil or stick!

That's what I do buddy !

awesome...I was just wondering cause for some reason i was undewrthe impression that you had just used pencil shavings. Thanks for the replies :D

should be an easy DIY project if you put a longer blade extended out of the shapener body so you can use it as firesteel scrapper ;-) more uses for the same item

I got a plastic one from Office Depot that has a container to catch the shavings. About half the size of a credit card plus 5/8" thick.
