Well folks I finally broke down and bought a grinder to play with, so my spare dollars have been going to Pops over the past 6 mo. With a more and more demanding workweek recently I haven’t made a knife yet and prob won’t have a ton of time to play with the new toy in the near future, but managed to finish up an xmas project for my mother last night. Who knew the first thing I’d ever complete with a knife grinder was jewelry? A damascus pendant that incorporates steel from my late father’s old power trowel blades (I was raised by a concrete contractor and worked with him for 15yrs).
Just over a week ago I made the damascus at a friend’s place, then freehanded a necklace pendant on the new grinder. It was fun experimenting with different belts, and the final width at top and bottom are within 2 thousandths! After hand sanding at 600 grit I performed the final etch last night in the 11th hour with fingers crossed. In the pic below, the power trowel steel has dark stripes with silver outlines...Mom LOVED it!
I know this isn’t a Fiddleback topic, per se, but this community is the reason I had the tools and passion to make something so beautiful and sentimental for mom on this day.
Thank you all for that.

Merry Christmas!!
