Hey guys...Sorry got another knife question don't mean to annoy everybody just wanted to coolect some opinions on the full sized pendelton hunter. Wanted to know if anyone has one, and what they think of it. supposedly has a 3 1/2 inch blade and a thickness of 3/16 sounds decent

How much do they go for? About fifty bucks?

3/16 is a lot of steel for a 3.5" FRN folder. Do you need that thickness? Will it lead to usable strength in prying? Is the handle construction well matched to the build of the handle?

In my opinion partial ground knives should only cost a couple of bucks. Is it worth it compared to other choices available?

3/16ths is darned stout for a 3.5" blade. Not a bad thing in my book, stout is good, better than being too thin...for sure.

The Rat7 is 3/16" and it's 7" blade, if that tell you anything.
Big question is: What steel are we talking about?

Oh, and your questions are no bother, it is a knife forum, afterall! ;)

If we're talking about the Cold Steel full size Pendleton Hunter, it's VG-1, according to their website. The spine is 3/16'', the grind is hollow. 3-1/2" blade, 4-3/4'' handle, 8-1/4'' OAL. Just peeped at it on their site. If it ain't the one, disregard all! :foot: :D

yeah that's the one...what is vg-1 steel??? I'm not to slick on the steels I've seen it advertised elsewhere as aus-8 even at that with a decent heat treatment it sounds like a stout little performer...

Fun part about buying knives or other goodies on line-- as manufacturers make changes, you get old stock and new stock mixed up all over the web. Could happen in brick and mortar store too. Web programmers and copy writers make mistakes. I'll bet you could see an old description and get the newer model. Call or email and check if you can. Caveat emptor!

Here's a link to thread about VG1 versus VG10 and AUS 6 and 8. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=409934

Here's the specs:
%C %Cr % Mo % Ni
VG1: 0.95-1.05 13.0-15.0 - 0.2-0.4 - 0.25 or lower -

That seems like an OK steel just looking at the specs, similiar elementally to ATS 34, about 1% carbon, about 14% chromium, but much much less molybdenum. Also about like Aus10, without the vanadium. Can't imagine that it would perform like either, as the high molybdenum content in the ATS34 and the vanadium in the Aus 10 is what makes each of them special versus other similiar steels.

Look on this steel chart, you can make some comparisons:

It shouldnt be too thick with a hollow grind. I like blades that dont flex, but I also like them to be able to cut. Full flat grinds are my favourite though.
