This area I live in is just amazing. Sears in Austin TX does not sell the 1" belt sanders any longer. I have checked with Home Depot, Mccoys Building Materials, and Lowes with no luck. I finally found them in Tylertown. MS

In your experience is the Delta SA 180 a good machine. Tyler Tool Company has eight they expect in this week. If they are good I will make sure they send me one. Please let me know something.:)

The Delta is probably about as good as anything, but if you still want a Sears, you can order it online from sears.com. There is some shipping involved, but usually they drop the price on the website to compensate for that. I have ordered parts for some of my older Sears stuff and they ship pretty fast.

I believe that new Sears 2" x 42" grinder has a dust port on the belt shroud, and I wish mine had one of those. Right now I have to clamp a shopvac hose near the bottom of the belt to keep some of the dust down.

cliff - do you use yours with the cover on? I took mine off probably the 2nd day I had it. Got in the way too much. Of course, this means lots more dust floatin' around. But since I work outdoors, this is not a problem.

Pappy - I think I may have misread your email/post. I didn't realize you wanted a comparison of the Delta over the Sears/Craftsman/Tradesman/etc. brands.

Yes, the Delta is better than the others. For that reason, it's usually well over $100 for one. However, every once in a while, Home Depot or Lowe's will have one on sale. Also, amazon.com has them on sale now and then for around $100 - and for purchases above $25 they'll ship for free.

To be honest, I have not had the best success with getting power tools through the mail. Even with Harbor Freight. They're just not packed well enough. They should be double-boxed (like computers). Instead they come in regular boxes without hardly any padding.

Best of luck in your search, Pappy.

If I may make a few comments.

I bought one of the Sa180's the first of October. First day that I used it, the pulley that drives the belt broke. I called Delta and they promised to ship a replacement part. After 4 emails, three phones, and one temper tantrum the part arrived last Friday. it is unfortuneate that I had ordered the pulley that the cutting belt rides on, but they shipped the pulley the motor belt attaches to.

While I do like my machine, and have attached a shop vac to the dust port, I am not very happy with the service that I've gotten from their customer service department.

I sure hope your problem is an isolated incident. I have very little patience for that kind of carrying on. I've fought my temper all my life and a brand new tool breaking down the first day would just about flip my trigger.:)

I'm wondering if an adjustment wasn't off some how, some where.

That's why I try to buy tools at the local hardware place if at all possible. That way, I can just go in and exchange it - no questions asked.

Waiting for mail can be soooo aggravating...

Pen:

I use that Sears with the outside cover off so belts can be changed quicker. However, I use it out in the garage with a filter mask, and sometimes with a shop-vac hose in place at the bottom. If I had to use it inside, something else would have to be rigged up and I might be thinking about the newer Sears with the dust port. Otherwise I would be subject to "criticism."

As far as getting stuff through the mail, I got a Dewalt bench planer and a couple routers UPS from Amazon without a scratch on them. Also got a replacement chuck from Sears for my drill press and it came in a 1' x 1' box full of plastic blister sheets, so they seem to pack things pretty well too.

I bought the blasted tool at the local Lowes. Yeah I could have (and mostly should have) taken it back to them, but I work in retail and I don't like to cause them problems for the failures of their suppliers.

Taking items back apart and returning them to the manufacturer or a reclaim center can be a large cost.

I think I'm going to hide for awhile. Terrible day today. Anyone see's a 15in sirupti blem going for $35-50 let me know.

My Delta belt sander is scheduled to be delivered Monday. Hope things go according to plan.

Dan, Kim said to tell you thanks for the recommendation.:)

Pappy - Kim is great, eh? Good service, fast delivery - not to mention, the lowest prices on great belts!

You're gonna love the lil' belt sander. Runs great. Make sure to get a leather belt from www.leevalley.com for sharpening. Makes all the difference in the world.

Sure enough I had forgot about that one. A good thing you reminded me. I will need that one too.

Yea Kim seems just great and very helpful for old dumbies. I can dig the prices on the belts for wood work. Pretty hard to beat .50 each.:)

You might check ebay. I picked up a brand new Craftsman 2 X 42 belt sander for $61.00 plus shipping. Check the feedback on the seller and be careful but you might find a deal there.

It might not be the cheapest way to go. But, for a hundred bucks and no shipping I didn't think I could turn it down for a new machine.

I'll let every body know what I think of it after I get it set up and try it on a couple of things I have waiting to do.:)
