Every time I go to a powwow, I always make sure to buy a raffle ticket for a Pendleton blanket. If I won one, I would actually use it. In relation to outdoors gear, or just on the bed at home, have any of you used Pendleton or Hudson Bay blankets? I've seen tutorials in Backwoodsman on turning a HBC blanket into a capote, or crafting clothing from an old Pendleton blanket. I do not think I could bring myself to spend money on a new one, but used? Sure. I've seen plenty of knockoffs at junk malls, a couple weeks ago I did a knife trade in a junk mall parking lot, and my buddy and I went in to check out what they had. We both saw a Pendleton knockoff, which was considerably smaller than a real Pendleton. I would've paid five bucks for it, and ran it through the wash at the Laundromat before using it, but I wouldn't pay 25 bucks for it. Anyway, I want to see your Pendleton, Hudson Bay ten point blankets and any other iconic blankets. I've gotten wool blankets at powwows, Harbor Freight, gun shows etc. Pendletons and Hudson Bay blankets stand out as part of my heritage.

I have a Pendleton blanket that my mom gifted me when we moved her out of her house(her decision!). I have been wearing Pendleton shirts since I was 13-14 - 45 years ago and was lucky enough to inherit my dads Pendleton shirts. I also found a really nice Pendleton jacket in an antique store out in Hays Ks. Green and Black check - needs to go to the dry cleaners - I was checking it over the other night and discovered that the bird storage in the back shows signs of previous occupants. I do like the old stuff - haven't purchased any new so I do not know how it compares. I think I would have a hard time cutting up a Pendleton or Hudson Bay blanket.

In the fourth week of December of 1971 I was teaching (my first year) at a remote fly-in community on God's Lake in northern Manitoba, while my newly-minted bride was into her first year of nursing school hundred of miles south in Winnipeg. Christmas just around the corner. After a one-day weather delay we finally got flown-out for free (a once-a-year-perk) on December 23rd ... on a vintage WW2 DC-3!

Needless to say, it was a fine Christmas ... and not just because my wife sent me back up North a week later with the biggest purplest 6-point king-sized HBC blanket that was made. (Winnipeg had the flagship store of the 300-year-old company.)

I now live in the Crowsnest Pass of southwest Alberta. I haven't seen that gorgeous Manitoba lady in fifteen years, but last night (as usual) I slept like baby under that fine blankey. It looks so classy that I choose to use a bed-spread. With just a couple a sky-blue pillows ... very spartan and austere/clean and classy ...

Think "Norwegian Wood" ... :)

FWIW, a few years ago Converse was selling their high-tops made with the most famous HBC blanket colours (creamy white with the trademark multi-coloured "bars") ... they might have even been wool. I saw an internet photo of a hotshot black-suited director at the Toronto International Film Festival "sporting" a pair of them on the red carpet, and sent the photo to an artsy lady-friend who promptly (as in a heartbeat) ordered a pair.

Edit: Yup ... just Googled them ... the genuine article ...

Great blankets if you can afford them. I personally have a number of inexpensive wool blankets that I purchased at Cabelas years ago (full sized like $20 each). They were intended for camping, emergency car blanket, and less formal uses. But I found they worked quite well on regular beds if you needed or wanted the warmth.
