I am looking for information on schools of silat here in the NY. I have recently become very curious about it and did a little searching and got to see some of the djurus (I know I didn't spell that right, sorry) Anyway I liked what I saw very much. I am currently studying white crane but I would like to to look into studying Silat too or perhaps getting a little supplimental training. Does anyone know where I can find such a thing? Thanks very much in advance.

There is a Perisai Diri Pentjak Silat group taught by Master Yana Sastranegara someplace in Manhattan, don't know the address offhand, but I heard he's in a dance studio in the West 20's (?)...you might want to call the Indonesian Counsulate for this one, they might have an idea where he is...might be in the Yellow Pages, too.

If you don't mind travelling, there is also a Jagabaya-certified Mande Muda Silat group in Lindenhurst, Long Island (Suffolk County), you might wanna check out
www.mandemuda.com

for the contact numbers...

In Jersey, near Princeton, is the Gayong Warrior Arts Academy--taught by the most excellent Cigku Sulaiman Sharif...the system is Silat Seni Gayong from Malaysia, and it's brilliant stuff...check it out at:
www.gayong.com

The Gayong school might seem really far for you, but there are friends of mine that live in the City that make the trip via train every week, and they say it's totally worth it...have met the guy (Cigku Sulaiman), I believe them.

Why not explore Pekiti-Tirsia? Has a lot of Silat within its empty-hand system...

Hock's Archipelago Combatives program may also appeal to you...

That's all I can think of for now...good luck.

Oh yeah, if you just want a taste of Silat, Paladin has some great videos: Steve Plinck, Joe Simonet, I personally enjoyed Kelly Worden's interpretation of Kuntao, and my personal faves, Bob Orlando's INDONESIAN FIGHTING ARTS book and video package...awesome stuff, well worth the $$$ you'll spend--haven't seen the Rick Hernandez tapes myself, but I hear they are pretty cool...see for yourself at:

Good luck again, and allbest.

I also don't want to stop going to my current school (wanting to have my cake and eat it too I guess!LOL) Thanks again I'll check this out for my first taste of the indonesien arts. Much appreciatted.

I am also looking for something less expensive and more along the lines of the Mande Muda, Cimunde, Pukolan, Kuntao, Serak etc. I have alot of the above mentioned videos if you're interested. Also sorry I have'nt gotten back to ya on the work out. I'll call ya ASAP. Take care.....RDT (Rich)
