Anybody have experience with Penn State Industries dust collectors?

Considering upgrading to a Cyclone style and curious about their long term dependability. Their pricing is certainly attractive!

Yep, I've checked all the magazine ratings but they are like new car test reports with every thing brand new. Trying for a view afer some use and time.

Thanks.....

I've had a 1 1/2 hp Penn State dust collector and one of their medium size air cleaners for about 3 years and I like them both! :)

The dust collector is connected to my 2" x 72" belt grinder, 9" horizontal disc sander, and 6" x 12" surface grinder.

Their remote control system works great, too!:D

What Tom said.

I use their dust collector in my woodshop and it has held up well for the last 4 years. I also have one of the filter boxes with 960 CFM, dual motor in the shop ceiling and it has been run almost constant since 1995.

Tom: Thanks. Looks like NICE stuff. Makes my DELTA bag/barrel model look really low tech! I have a RIGID air filter hanging up, looks about the same as theirs. Filters cheaper than at the 'Depot. Hmmmm....

You guys using the cyclone model?

Since mine is just hooked up to grinders (only collecting fine dust), I'm using the DC-2 twin bag model. I have screens over the collection chutes.

The cyclones are better if you are hooking up to machines where you might suck up chunks of material as they will stop them from hitting the impeller.

Of course, you can always add an in-line separator to a regular bag model and that will provide similar protection. ;)

Thanks everyone for the user info.

The one I have now seperates most stuff into a 55 gal. drum before venting outside to a water filled trap. The problem is the collector sits on top of the drum and all the duct work is metal & screwed together, so cleaning it out is a legnthly task.

What kind of measures are you folks taking to decrease sparks getting to your dust bag? Sounds like RD has some kind of water trap outside. Can you give me more details about it?
Also, what micron are your collection bags rated to?
One last question, how far from the grinder do you have your collector and do you think this is an important consideration in regards to sparks?
Thanks.

Collector has 16' of metal duct between it and the hot stuff.

The water trap outside is a drum with baffles diverting airflow to the water surface before venting thru the final filter @ 1/2 micron.
