I'm interested in finding out about two different stones, suitable for use as hones, that occur in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They are mentioned in the Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Arkansas for 1890 by LS Griswold, which can be found here. The stones that I'm interested in are on page 30 of the actual report, and page 59 of the file that I linked to. The ones that I'm interested in are the whetstone schists, and in particular, the mica schists with garnets that are interstatafied with the whetstone schists towards the middle of the syncline.
Does anyone have any experience with using these stones? I'd also be interested to here about the industry surrounding these hones, did they ever find a market outside of Pennsylvania? How extensively were they quarried? What sort of renown did they enjoy as hones? Anything along those lines really.

Kindest regards,
Alex

I am from PA and have never heard of them. Interesting though. I tried some Anthracite but no luck, just made my hands black.
