Pension for Gurkas?

seems like many folks I know get messed with by the military. My dad gets a paltry check for his knee injuries while serving. Apparently, they figured you'd die or something, and they'd jsut hafta send the flag and Purple Heart off to yer folks, case closed. THey seem really reluctant to pay pensions, Gi bill, college, etc. if they can figure a way out of it...

I do not serve, so I only have ythe opinions of my enlisted pr past enlisted family and friends, but the story sounds the same each time.

Then, there are those that gave all. Their families were given a miserable lump sum check that might pay the bills for three months and a folded flag. Sounds like real gratitude to me.:barf:

Re: A Shame,
The fat cat bean counters are heartless, but the American public can be pretty fickle too. I remember when I came home from Desert Storm the city of Miami threw a big party for us and put us in a parade.
Stuck us on a float like a bunch of half a@@ed prom queens. When we got to the end of the route and dismounted, I turned around and saw there in the parade a small group of Vietnam veterans, marching proudly and carrying the American flag. Me and every other GI there went nuts, cheering them just as loudly as we could. Some of the folks that had previously been cheering us looked at us funny, like "what's the big deal?". It made me feel lower than dirt, having just paraded through town like some conquering hero, knowing the welcome home those guys got.

There's no shame in serving your county.

They all had their turn at feeling as you did once.

The problem is how much should you give a man who offers up his life for your country? Here or there. When I see those old vets at the VA hospital rolling around in their wheelchairs and teetering on plastic legs I know what sort of monetary compensation they are getting and I wonder about the fairness of it all. Military men and vets everywhere are underpaid. Truth is you can't pay them enough. The Gorkhas are just another example. Give them a medal, have a parade, kiss them goodbye, send them home -- and forget them. Same story everywhere.
