People who don't understand why you flip a knife

I have a question for all here and want to know if anyone else has this problem. I currently reside (threw marriage) with someone who does not understand why I can sit a flip my knives. I've tried to explain that it is because I enjoy the science, beauty, and mechanics of my collection, plus it's good practice should I ever have to deploy a blade quickly. I even backed that up with a true story of when I was on active duty and a friend was being dragged by a line that had snared a toggle on his life vest and I was able to, without thinking open my knife and cut him loose.

This not withstanding, every time I flip a knife I am met with a look and words that suggest I'm a demented "nut" who sit's around playing with knives. At my age and at this point in life I don't plan to hide in the bathroom just to flip a knife.

Just wondering if I'm the only one who lives with someone who just doesn't understand?

By the way. She has no problems with my guns. Just the knives. I don't get it!

relax, i have been doing it for 45 years with the same woman....Now she just grins and she is glad i am still here.........Have a great day..........carl

It's only a nervous habit ! You could alternate by rolling three steel balls in your hand or clicking a ball point pen etc.

Explain it’s a hobby and that knives are not just general purpose tools, but also make excellent toys. Come on, you’re collecting knives, not real dolls! :-) She should give you a break.

I'm the same way.

I like doing things with my hands, and I think it is a good idea to practice with your knives a lot to get as comfortable and competent with them as you can.

You should get a balisong, then you will really get some looks from people. :D

just the opposite, here. my (new and improved) wife loves the way i will throw a large fixed blade into the air, flip it and catch it by the handle. not only that, but so does her whole family. then again, they're all from S.E. Asia, where someone who knows how to handle a blade is not considered nutty, but instead rather useful :)

Haha ...I do that with fixed blades all the time too!

-Just try not to drop it on yourself like I did last year. You may have seen the nasty pics of my ankle with the severed achilles tendon.?!

After that incident my wife gets a little nervous when I flip the big knives around! :o ...She's getting tired of driving me to the E.R.

Well, I did in fact get my daughter balisong for her birthday but I was not allowed to teach her how to use it while certin people are present.................

My Wife has always perplexed by this behavior too. When I take out my Blur or my Vantage Pro and start flipp'n ... she pretends she has one too, and flips her wrist with a corresponding finger snap .... thus imitating my action. I get a kick out of it, and so does she.

Yeah I bet she does. Just kidding - hard to believe that one but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Must be a special lady. :)

They don't even know what they're doing, but they're doing it! :grumpy:

You think she hates men just 'cause she doesn't understand his knife-play???

I tend to twirl/spin just about anything that I get my hands on--flashlights, drinking glasses, you name it. If someone told me they thought I was weird for doing it I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that they hate my entire gender.

you shouldnt have gotten married bro. now you have to feel uncomfortable just for wanting to look at your pocketknives. welcome to this is the rest of your life:(

No brother - but this is a "Pop Psych" theory (truth IMO) that will give you pause to a lot of thought, if you take the time to watch it or the many other videos, manuscripts and books on the subject.

Since the final thrust of feminism - the 60's women's rights advocacy and the bra-burning movement, (there have been others but this turned the worm), men have slowly been "handed their hats" so to speak. All you have to do is watch/read the material and have your brain turned on to know that it's true.

Look at the state that the OP has been reduced to, due to the sad state of affairs. Women are the weaker sex - they have been slowly indoctrinated to believe and behave otherwise.

Yeah, the feminist movement got me too. I’ve been indoctrinated to think that women are pretty wonderful and I often change my behavior, so that women like me. It’s too late for me :-)

Ladies like a sharp dressed man:p

Chicks dig me.

Ladies like a sharp man

Pun intended..

I used to have a little gerber on my keychain about 7yrs ago and would depress the lock while flipping it back and forth as we'd walk thru the mall or something, she'd just look at me like I was crazy and that (what would people think)..

Now everytime I get a flipper she flips out, but she has learned to accept shredded paper throughout the house... (jk those days have passed).. well.... a little..

good luck..... maybe you out to get her a pink one..
