hi,
im from finland and been throwing for 3 years now. Here, knife throwing is not very known to people and their reactions are something between disbelief and bit fear i think:(. here many people believes that only violent lunatics has this kind of hobbies. as knive throwing is unknows to the great buplic here, there are no any organised groups or clubs for throwers that i know.

so im curious hows the rest of the world?:D how people react to your hobby in your country?

It depends how you present it.
If you have a nice look, a sporting target and no beer in the left hand :) the reaction is quiete good. It looks like sport then.

Generally the reaction depends on the person seeing it, and what they perceive. Most folks think it is dangerous until they watch and see the precautions you take; other people decide they will never approve and, so, disapprove.

I rarely have people see it as taboo or weird. Some laugh at me, tell me there's no point when people carry guns, most who say that don't carry guns either. I guess they don't see the point in target practice. People who shoot enjoy target shooting as well.

I explain it like this: Some people throw balls, some kick them, other people play strategy games, and others race. Some sports combine all of these. The difference is I do it with knives.

ill demontrate a typical conversation that i have time to time. im very normal looking guy with glasses and looks. here goes...
-so, what hobbies do you have?
-well, i throw things.
-throw? what do you mean?
-i practice throwing with knives, axes, boomerangs and so on.
-...
-ummm... i throw them as target practice, you know?
-... oookk...
-:grumpy:

like i said, throwing here is uncommon so i do understand their reaction, but i have been thinking has many throwers facing this reaction.

I agree, it depends how you present it. If you do it in a way that is fun, safe and even educational people are more likely to accept it. After showing off my hobby I have had several people want to learn and even go onto buying knives and building targets. I think its the same for gun nuts, if you meet someone and instantly start talking about how many guns you own, how often you shoot and what you like to shoot don't be surprised if you get labeled a wierdo freak maniac. Having a little bit of talent and skill at sticking a thrown object into a target is a very cool icebreaker. I have been to many dull boring cook outs doing the same old stuff, horseshoes, corn hole and the like; but if you break out the knives and start chucking them at a safe target just watch the people gather around and want to give it a try.

Very timely thread (for me), I work for a charity in the UK and want to introduce this as an activity, alongside our bushcraft, I've had some interesting reactions as well.

However, when people have taken the time to listen WHY we want to do it they seem to warm up to the idea. We think it will be great for helping people's confidence, hand eye co-ordination and just plain fun!

Anyone have any links for where I can get more information on safety, tips techniques etc...?

thanks, John
