7 months ago ,my grinder bit me,leaving me with a trip to the hospital to get 10 stitches , ever since then i found all kinds of excuses why not to finish the knife and start the fire so i can pound steel once again!!
On monday i will check out this auction and hopefully be a proud new owner of an old anvil,i can hardly wait!!hopefully a "new to you" anvil will light the fire once again.
Hunting season has treated me very well, which leaves me with lots of time set up my new shop, and hopefully my luck hasn`t run out yet...maybe i`ll be the only one interested in that old hunk of sacred steel...ya right!!

the sun shines and the rain falls on everyone....just be careful and do the best you can........I know LOTS of people who DONT make knives who have gotten hurt big time on their jobs.

I've never heard of anyone chopping off a leg or better yet their head while making knives.

Do you feel better.

Seriously though, like they say, you've gotta get back up on that horse and ride again.

Get it all going (again) with that new anvil and then post a picture of a new knife, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see it.

Best of luck to you,
Nick

Get rid of power tools. You don't need them. Hand tools are much safer.

What I find at least for myself is if I'm in the mood to work on my knives I go for it everytime.
If that little voice is saying "Hey you really ought to get out there and finish that next blade" If I don't feel that spark of enthusasiam but am forcing myself because that little voice makes me feel guilty.
It usually turns out to be a frustrating waste of time.

Never give up.
You need to decide when the little voice upstairs comes from guilt or from the JOY

of creating, and doing something you like to do.

I just couldn't tolerate sitting in front of that grinder for 5 -6 hours a day anymore. I would walk out of my shop covered in grit from head to toe. It's really easier than you might think working without power. There isn't much of a learning curve. We all know how to use hand tools. It's just a matter of going for it. You catch on pretty quickly when the bills come due. It is much safer without all the fast moving equipment. Blisters and small burns are about the worse thing that can happen now. My overhead is next to nothing too. So even though it is slower you still make about the same money since not as much comes out of it to buy more supplies like grinding belts and machinery up keep. I can fit my entire tool arsenal in the back of my '72 scout so if I want to I can head for the mountains for the day and still come home with a new knife.

ralph is right. i was feeling crummy (had a flu) this morning. so i dragged myself down to the shop, started grinding on a stack of steak knives for a customer and after awhile i caught myself whisling and feeling good! go for it!

Pain is nature's way of reminding you to be careful. At the moment I'm healing in about 3 spots, and that's about normal for me. I often get so completely focussed on my grinding that I will see blood on the steel and not have a clue where it came from. I know "who", but not "where".

Maybe I'm just a klutz, but I think these things are just a part of knifemaking. Certainly burning yourself on hot steel is a regular event. Ask any knifemaker who's ever used a 3M Micron belt, and they'll tell you about how easily the edge slices into a finger and takes forever to heal. You'll eventually have a belt break on you; that hurts.

But at the end of the day, is there really anything more satisfying than seeing the smile on the face someone who's just gotten one of your knives? I guess there are a number of cliches that could apply here, but the most appropriate is maybe "just suck it up and get back in the game."

7 months a go I wa arresting a drunk, transient who had just had a bunch of dental work done at the VA. I don't whether to question the dentist's skills, because there was a lot of blood in this guys mouth. Well, he didn't really want to be arrested, so he decided to spit on me. Unfortunately, I was talking, well, hollering, at him at the time, so when he spit it went fully into my open mouth and eyes.

My wife was pregnant then, so in the week it took to get his blood tests back, she wouldn't so much as give me a tempting stare, much less a kiss or anything else, for fear of hurting the baby. Now, for 18 months from the time of the incident I have to get blood tests every 6 months to make sure I didn't get Hepatitis, HIV, or something else.

I would have preferred 10 stitches dished out by a grinder...
