0.5 is 50% and 0.92 = 92%, since pepper spay is not 50% or 92%, I would think what they mean is both are less than a full percent of the hot stuff. The most I've ever seen any is for bears and it's 10-20%.

That is .005 or .0092 Capsaicin. Look at the scoville heat units. The pigger the nuber the hotter it is.

^^^ This. It's less about the percentage of oleoresin capsicum and more about the degree with which it burns. 5% will hurt worse than 9% if the pepper juice they use has more kick. I've been sprayed by 18% and it burned like hell for 24 hours solid with residual effects for about 5 days more. I was pretty much blind that entire day. I was sprayed by 3% and it burned like hell for about half an hour with residual effects for about 20 hours after. The peak pain was the same, but one lasted considerably longer. So yeah, look for SHUs combined with percentage of capsacanoids contained within the can combined with the strength of of the juice itself.

Having said that, I'm not an expert and I don't know if the percentage itself was what made 18% last longer, but I'm sure the concentration did have something to do with it. As far as how bad the peak pain is, like the previous dude said, look up what the scoville units are on what you're interested in. If you're looking to temporarily incapacitate someone for basic self defense use, in other words, just enough to get away, then look for a low concentrate with high number of scoville units. You don't want to burn their eyeballs out though unless you can prove without a doubt they were trying to seriously hurt or kill you. At that point everything's fair.

i agree. however i live in canada so its only legal to carry dog spray and the perticular one i bought was couter assault dog spray that has ".92 % capsaicin and related capsaicinoids"

Check this out: http://www.sabrered.com/servlet/StoreFront

Sounds like they offer some bear sprays that are in compliance with Canadian law that are at 2%.

For what it's worth, the company making this, SEC, also makes Saber Red, which is carried by a lot of law enforcement agencies, at least here in the US.
