Earlier this evening I offered to help our Swedish knifemaker friend Per Sima post some pics of his latest knife here. He has sent me images and some info on the knife. Here is his explanation of the knife:

Hi,
I will take your offer. This is my third knife. It has got a Viking theme. On the sheath which is half wood/leather (raw hide) it has a image of "Mjölner" which is Thor's Hammer (The Viking God who kept the bad guys out). I made it from brass, engraved it and inserted it into "African red wood" the wood is not treated other than grinding and polishing.

The blade is hand forged, polished edge and polished raw forgeing surface. Length is 70 mm ( about 2 3/4 inch) made by Enoksson in Sweden

The handle is African hard red wood, nickle silver and brass. The ingraving is in the ancient nordic alphabet (runs) and it says "Blåtunga"(Blue thounge) and "Orm"Snake- actually the name of teh bearer) from the Book of Frans G. Bengtsson.
The wood has its own history. It was collected after a bush fire in Liberia, West Africa in 1979. We lived there for five years when I was a kid. It has been in my father's basement drying for 23 years. The wood was in the form of a 120 cm log, burned with bushfire but still intact. I got started in February 2002 with the knife making and thought it might be cool to make a knife handle out of this material.

Best regards,

Per

Welcome to the forums, Per! Very nice work. And an interesting story behind the wood. I'm of Swedish descent, my family came from Varberg, and I love your use of the rune's and Mjollnir! Thanks for sharing! Another good spot to show pictures around here is "The Gallery".:)

Thanks for the kind words. I am flattered and it only inspires to do more and better knives. I have posted the three knives in The Gallery. I will add the spec for them tomorrow. Now I have to attend to my sons birthday party. He is Seven today. His second Name is Thor after the Viking god who used the Mjölner hammer. Thats where I got the inspiration for it and it is dedicated to my son.

I thank you all for your kind words. GBut excuse my french or.. what language it is, but what does "cumfy" mean?

P

I think he meant to put an (o) in that word . It means comfortable , easy to hold and easy on the hand . I hope that is what he meant .

That was the purpose. It is heavy for its size, but befinately balanced since the hand forged blade's "flat end" is approx. 6 mm.

Excuse my typing in my earlier replies. I diden't read them through and edit before submitting.

That's right, but I did intend to spell it "cumfy" :D

Some one asked for a spec. Wellhere it is:
Blade:
Material: Carbon steel SS2258, Hardened in oil and blued to 60 HRC. 2 ¾ in length, 14/16 in height, total length 7 in
Thickness- at the base approx. ¼ in that thins out towards the tip.
Surface – Raw forged surface that is polished. The edge is sharpened to razor sharpness.
The tongue is needle type and goes through the handle.

Handle:
Staring from the blade.
Brass 5/16 in thick polished and worked into a finger guard integrated with the shaft wood.

Wood – African red hard wood. A extremely dense and hard red wood. The color is dark red with elements of lighter colour. The wood has dried in log form for 23 years.
Spacer – nickel silver 0.8 mm
Mineral imitation – Blue carbonate of copper/green copper ore mixed with plastic to create a imitation of stone which is workable with hand tools.
Nickel silver, 0.8 mm
Wood as above.
Brass polished with engravings. Teutonic runes “Blåtunga” and “ORM meaning blue thounge and Orm. Inspired by a book of Frans G. Bengtsson.

Sheath:
Lower part of the sheath is made of the same wood as above. Polished to a high-grade shine. A hand made image of Thor’s hammer Mjölner is inserted in the wood.
The top part is made from colored raw hide. It is sewn on the reverse side. It is colored with a black knurled pattern in a dark red/brown environment. Blending very nicely with the color of the wood. The hanger is colored and patterned in the same manner and is attached to the sheath with a brass colored D-ring.

Thanks for sharing! That's a really nice looking knife! I was really into Norse mythology when I was a kid, seeing that makes me want to go pick up the old books and start reading all about it again! :)
