Just curious out there but what do you guys consider the best all around blade length in a bush blade?I currently am using a 6 inch blade but I also will use anything in the 5-7 inch range.7 seems to be the best if I could only have one blade length, due to chopping and moderate light work.5 and 6 are my fav lengths for all around utility.

i carry a 3-4 inch folder most times and it works out well. anywhere from 3-7 inches would work most of the time, but it depends on what i am doing as far as hunting, fishing, camping. and what terain i am in desert, jungle, forest. so you pick the tools for the job.

I like a 5-in fixed blade for outdoor belt carry. Any longer and I lose fine control over the point for work on wood or game. A longer blade, for me, makes the knife more of a weapon than a tool, and a shorter blade should be on a pocket knife. I don't miss my pocket knife when I carry a 5-in "field" knife, but I do when I carry a longer fixed blade.

Other tasks, like chopping or bushwhacking are best done with other tools.

For me, a 3-4 inch folder is perfect for my needs. I have started using my CRKT Ryan 7 (3,5 inch blade) in the kitchen to slice tomatoes, etc. Works like a charm. I also use my CRKT Polkowski-Kasper Companion (4 inch blade) for similar tasks around the kitchen and in the camp for smaller work. It is also very light to carry on belt.

For belt carry in the field I use my 5.5 inch hunting knife or my 9 inch bladed Aitor Bucanero survival knife, (similar to Jungle King). It all depends what I need it for. The large Aitor is great for light chopping (branches) and sawing. I prefer to use a small axe for real chopping work. My "hunting" knife has a nicely placed choil near the blade for good choking. The choil makes the blade about 4 inches.

Overall I agree that 4-7 inch blades are great for belt carry, with 5 inches being the best all-rounder.

The saying "The further from the road the bigger the knife" is more true
that one might suppose.

Consider that in a true wilderness your needs for a large cutting tools will
be very real to shealter and care for yourself. If your just a weekend camper
then the road never really gets that far away so the choice is much easier.

Well said, Tightwad. I own a nice 7" Murry Carter that is suprisingly rugged, but I learned to use an axe/hatchet to chop (north woods), and I have a great GB mini. I like a very nice 3" neck knife unless I'm getting fanatically light weight in my travels, then I opt for a regular size SAK- most tool for the weight. Funny though, I rarely use the blade! I hate to cut up trees and such, but do trim eyeball gouger branches away from my camp. I always worry about the what-if, but after 40 years of camping, have come to value caution and care more than big or heavy blades. I have little faith in folders in a survival situation, so if I am really in deep, I carry a 4" Strider that has served well to split wood and clean game.

I used a Randall #16 SP-1 when I went camping this past weekend. It's a 7" blade, and it did everything I needed a knife to do. I brought along a tomahawk for any chopping chore.
