I am looking to buy the perfect bowie or perhaps survival knife but on limited funds. I would like to ask what you folks think of the LInder Bowie with the 10 inche blade with stag handle. I know it's not the best but the price of about $130.00 is in my range. I also like the survival knifes sort of like the Rambo verions 1 and 2 but know the junk you see on ebay and such is just that. JUNK. Any suggestions from fellow knife lovers??? I want something that not only looks cool but can actually be used and take a beating without ending up breaking or looking like crap. that's my story folks. so, please help me find something that will work in my price range. we are talking camping and such as a use for the knife by the way. maybe even self defense.

thanks to all

If I seriously needed a survival knife, I would try to save another $120 or so and buy something from Busse Combat. In fact, this is exactly what I did, buying a Natural Outlaw. Their Steel Heart, Satin Jack, or Battle Mistress would be candidates also.
This is not going to be an ideal camp knife, however. I would either make do with it or use a good folder for slicing chores.

you'll find 'em pretty much daily on ebay with the notation that they are "discontinued"...maybe but there are a bunch out there....I carry one in the trunk of the car....great knife...hefty and typical Gerber quality...price @ $100 bucks:p

Welcome to Bladeforums! I'll move this thread to the general Blade Discussion Forum for you. There are so many forums here it can take a while to figure them out ... the Community Center is for off-topic discussion, ie not about knives.

Druid,Try Newt Livesay he has his new knife called the AK it looks like a awsome blade.I think it is on sale for 120 bucks right now.
Anything Newt makes is going to be a work horse check out his knives.
Also check out Mineral Mountain hatchet works they make some strong bowies that are 130 bucks for a 10 inch 5160 blade.
Newt livesay is makeing his blade in 1095.And for 250 bucks I think he will make it in D2.
Good luck.

Also the coldsteel trailmaster I can highly recommend ive been useing it for a little over a month now and it is great.I have cleaned squirrel, rabbit, trout and a very big pig that we cooked a couple of weeks ago.And it has held up great.

You should check out the Ontario Knives, Bill Bagwell bowies. They have a few that would fit into your price range and they are really nice knives.

Bowies

Just keep clicking on the picture of the knife if you want to see a bigger picture.

I am quite happy with my Bill Siegle Bowie.. It has an 11 inch-long, 1/4 inch thick blade of 5160 carbon steel, and black grooved G-10 scales, along with a solid oval brass hand-guard. Bill can make you a Bowie that you will be VERY pleased with.

if I had a 130 bucks right now, what knife would I buy?

I can vaguely recall passing a toolbox on a worksite somewhere. I saw a knife in there that I considered quite boring in design, but interesting in the fact it was sitting amongst tools as if it was perfectly natural to be sheathless amongst hammers and files.

I said "Psshhh!....you dont scare me."

It said nothing.

I spat to myself, "Look at you, you boring knife! With yer plain old blade n' rubberish handle."

I looked left and right to make sure my next action did not offend an onlooking owner. I grabbed it for a moment....oooOOoo, not a bad chunk of metal, solid. I put it back hastily and walked off musing to myself. "Heck of a working knife." I thought. "Wish they would give it some personality, then I'd snag one"

Yadda yadda yadda I recantly go on a spending frenzy and start purchasing new knives (mostly SOG :) excellent, by the way). I make my way to this forum and learn much simply by reading..so I join and interact. Here's where I find that knife I covertly fondeled in its toolbox....The Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. People mention it often here, and the thread that convinced me to save up for one soon is right here And the sucker is a mere $128.95

You want a hollow handle with one o them super duper survival kits? I have a Aitor Jungle King 1 and I will testify to its ability to be not only a powerhouse of a knife but all the other 50 things it claims to be as well. If I were to be marooned on a desert isle with nothing but an knife with its scabbard it would be my JK1. Keep in mind it is not gonna pulverize a cement block but it will chop slice n saw whatever I tell it to and it has all the modern convieniences for the aristocraticated survivalist. The JK1 is a bit more than the projected budget;170$ is the least I found.

I have yet to come in contact with the Linder bowie you mentioned so I cannot comment.

I am recieving a X-42 Feild Knife from SOG in the next week. It is a factory second, I got it for around 70 bucks and I have been planning on buying one ever since I held it in a store. I am gonna put it through some practical testing and post me results here hopefully.

hope this wasnt to much junk to read. :)

There are several Spanish bowies advertised by Camelot Enterprises, including the Aitor brand. They claim to use a steel which is an improvement over 440C. TheSkinwalker's report above is the only one I have found regarding the performance of an Aitor knife, however.

I have the Nato Bowie, myself. It looks well-made, but I have never used it so I cannot comment on its abilities.
