Perfect hiking knife: Spydie Military

Just recieved my second Spyderco (first was a PE Cricket) in the form of a PE Military, and I couldn't be happier :)

Bare in mind I'm in the UK so its pretty much impossible to 'try out' or even have a look at a knife in person. Therefore pretty much everything about the knife was a bit of a suprise (luckily a good one).

----

After a lengthy debate on which knife to buy (originally looking at AL-Mar Sere 2k) I settled on a the Military as my choice for a hard-use, field utility knife for hiking. While it only arrived an hour or two ago, so far I believe its the embodiement of what I required;

Weight:
While not originally a requirment, the low weight of the Military is a big plus for me.

Funnily even though I spend hundreds of £'s on lightweight hiking gear, I never give a second through to carrying a weighty beast of a knife in my pack.
The Military seems to offer a great compromise between weight and performance (at least thats what I'm hoping), and in carrying it I don't feel like I'm loosing out compared to carrying a heavier knife.

Handle:
Simply amazing !!!

I was really shocked quite how big the handle was, even after seeing numerous pictures, but this isn't too say I wasn't pleased.....

The handle protrudes about 2" from my grip when I choke right up on the blade, leaving the blade feeling something akin to a whittling knife. The handle is long enough to easily accomodate my hand in the thickest pair of ski / riggers gloves, and facilitates the use of a variety of grips.

Personally I find this offers an excellent degree of control, but if you prefer your hand to cover the full-extent of a grip you might want to check one out before purchase.

I was also very impressed with the 'grippyness' of the G10 scales.
All the pictures I'd seen the scales looked fairly slick, with little to no texture (which was putting me off a little). As soon as I picked the knife up however, the aggressive texturing seemed to bite straight into my palm with a reasuring strength.
Deffinetly a knife that I'd be happy to use in and around water.

Simplicity:
I'd read that the Military was very easy to maintain / wash, which is a must for me when the knife is to be used in the prep of food.

Looking inside the Military's scales, the sheer simplicity and void inside brought a smile to my face. Its immediatley obvious that removal of debris, by rinsing, brushing etc will be a simple affair, and that cleaning can be carried out in the field.

-------

I can't comment on performance or edge retention as I haven't actually used the blade yet (bar a few minor tests :D ), but the knife did come with an excellent edge *indicates bare patch on arm*.

Blade opens very smoothly and seems to lock up strongly.

My one tiny grumble is that the lower finger choil doesn't have the same grooves as the rear of the thumbhole. While It is recessed, I'd imagine the little extra purchase it'd offer would be appreciated during slippery tasks.

------

Anyway, sorry for rambling on; most of which is more than likley old hat to any spyder-knut out there, but just thought I'd say a very big thank you to the folks at Spyderco for producing such an excellent product.

A quick pic of my lightweight hiking cook kit (click me)

Was it worth the $190 it cost me ? Hell yes !!!!!!!!

S30V :)

No, I hadn't seen that review (and I did have a nose around before ordering) but its cracking, thanks alot!

I agree entirley, cracking bit of kit.

IMHO the Military is the BEST prodution folder made and I haven't seen many customs that are any better.

Great!!:D Glad to hear you got the S30V. That was about the biggest complaint people had about the knife. It was just so hard to sharpen. Well now with S30V it should be a hell of alot easier. :)

p.s.- And BTW, Sporks are cool.:)

excellent mini review on the Military. I have wanted one for a long time but have always been concerned about the size. My big Spydie is a stainless Endura that cuts like the dickens but might have to take the plunge on a new Military.

If you don't want to spend the money, but want to get a better Spyderco than your S.S. Endura(IMO) you should try the FRN Endura.

Pros over S.S. model:

1. No slip grip.
2. Lightweight
3. VG-10 Steel is much better.
4. Flat ground slices better.

Cons vs. S.S.:

1. Doesn't look as nice.

So if you don't want to "take the plunge" an FRN endura is a great alternative. :)

Hehe aye, Snow-peak Titanium Spork :)

Cracking bit of kit, someone pointed them out on the forums and I just had to grab one.

You paid $190 for a Millie? Say it isn't so! Sounds like you bought one in the UK. Get them direct from the states - MUCH cheaper!

Aye, I bought it from the UK.

Unfortunatley after postage charges, import tax and VAT I'd be looking at $158 (working on $100 for the mili, $25 shipping and standard uk taxes).
Ontop of this alot of couriers will impose a £13 odd ($20) handling charge in addition to your original shipping payment :(

Add it all together and you're not looking at all that much less than ordering from the UK.

In my mind its much better to pay the little extra, have the parcel delivered next day (with no worries about it getting lost etc) and have no worries about customs.
In the past I've known people recieve parcels that have been openend and the knives 'tested' by the customs officals, resulting in everything from light scratching to heavy chipping.

Always like to know I'm getting a knife as it left the factory

Mindz I,

Glad to hear you like your Military. I purchased the S30V version today on ebay without ever actually handling one. I have been carrying either a G10 Police (ATS-55) or a FRN Delica (VG-10), but I wanted something a bit more "heavy duty" for EDC. Like you, I also considered the Al Mar (which I'm sure is a fine knife), but it seems that every time I try a different brand, I always come back to Spyderco.:D

Hehe,

I'm sure you'll be pleased with your choice :)

My only regret is after seeing how good the Mili is, I'm going to have to buy a para-military as well :D

Also,

Does anyone know if kydex sheaths are availible for the Military ?

Just nosing through an old knife source book, and noticed a picture of an older model of the Military;

Picture of old Military (click me)

I found it curious that these knives have grooves on the lower finger choil, and the newer models do not.

Just curious what the reason for this was ?

I had one with those groves. They looked good but really did not help with grip.

Mike Sastre makes Kydex sheaths for all kinds of Spydies. Highly recommended. (Unlike buying Spydies from UK dealers LOL).

Thanx Mindz_I. Appreciate the kind works. Also appreciate the input on the lack of texuring on the choil. We originally had some there, but I didn't like what had been designed. It's probably time that we redesign the texture on the Military blade.

Jsun,
Hehe Aye, but in my mind a quality product, is worth any price if it fulfills your desires :)
Cheers for the heads-up on river-city. Checking out their products now.

Sal;
Thanks for taking the time to respond, and again for an excellent product.

Using the knife a little more today and getting more of a feel for it. I can see that with the blade recessed into the handle even with aggressive texturing, I'd not really gain much in the way of grip, maybe only sacrifice comfort when gripping tightly .......

Bit of a question here,

Just noticed that the lanyard hole liner (for want of a better name) is slightly protruding from one side of the grip (0.3mm ish, while the other is just below the surface), just about visible and able to be felt with a fingernail run along the scales.

While not a big issue I was wondering if this is just friction fitted into the hole, so I may adjust it a little, or if it’s attached to the spacer below it and hence fixed.

Any help or insights appreciated.

Cheers
