Perfect Hunting Knife Design

I think I made the perfect hunting knife (in my opinion!).

I'm calling it a Hybrid Herron. It is a George Herron model 1 full tang variant. I made the guard like Jason Knight does on some of his full tang models, round choil, slight protrusion. The steel is 52100, rounded spine, tapered tang, handle is ivory paper micarta with red fiber liners, stainless hardware. The edge is an aggressive meat cutter which shaves but also raises the skin along with the hair.

I'm still learning the sheath thing but I made a horizontal sheath for concealed gut carry while riding a 4 wheeler.

Thanks for looking and interested in all opinions.

Opinions on the "perfect hunting design" are useless when based upon pictures. Give it to some small and large game hunters and let them tell you after it's been used about 3 times per person.

Of course perfect is subjective in any sense of the usage of the word, that's why I stated it was my opinion. The design has been field tested by 2 other hunters. Plus I think Mr. Herron's designs are much more practical and well planned that many others but that is only my opinion too. I actually prefer something a little pointier but it cuts and it feels balanced.

Really appreciate the encouragement everyone.

Agreed, he should send me one when deer season opens up and I'll give ya a full report. ;)
Actually, I hope to be trying out my own knives.

I think it is a good looking and well thought out knife. It certainly does look like it would make a great skinning knife. If you decide to keep this model as a standard you might want to get some video of it in action.

That's a great idea. Thanks. Good luck with your future hunting.

Looks great, I've always liked the semi-skinner blade pattern and the half guard on a hunter. I'd prefer a ½" longer blade, as the proportions look just a little off to me.

that's a super effective looking knife...can't help wonder though- would tightening up the radius between the guard an handle allow you to choke up just a tiny bit more?

That's a good thought. Thanks for the suggestion, I will see how that works on a wooden template.

I like everything about it

From the blade shape to the handle material

I also really like the sheath

You will have to make me one for this upcoming season my friend

Thanks man, consider it done. It should be able to slice smaller diameter rolls of tatami mats than what you've been slaying lately. By fall my sheaths should be better.

Everything about it is wonderful but the pin placement seems aesthetically odd to me.

I have witnessed a few perfect shots while hunting. Not sure I have seen the perfect hunting knife. But, not hard to find plenty I like, and I like this one. Nice design. You have a real winner there.

Thanks!

What looks off? I'm pretty obsessive about pin placement. I measured to the center and equal space from top/bottom of scales to put the Corby bolts.
Thx
