Spend most of my time lurking in this forum as I am not or wish to be a custom Emerson knife owner, but quite an avid user of the production pieces. Since Emerson stopped doing single bevel work, his folders, at least for me, have lost most of their appeal.
Just got a SOFCK-1A #027 (spear point) today from Extreme Outfitters, who got the knife to me double quick. Have to say that I finally got the Emerson I've always wanted, the handle a combo of the CQC8/ESM-1 originally on the SpecWar folders. Ironically the handle is the location of my only problem with the entire knife, the G10 is too thin, much thinner than my first run Commander and even thinner than a CQC7. I'll get the scanner up and running to get a comparison shot of these three knives and will bust out a caliper as well. What gives with this? Personally I like the thicker G10 scales of the old school Commander. Did Emerson get a good deal on skinny G10 or something?
That being said the knife is 100% flawless, smooth, locks up tight, sharp as any knife out of the box I seen. Functional blade shape, plenty of belly, easily sharpened and most importantly A WAVE. These should be standard on EVERY Emerson. The feature can't be beaten, auto speed without the possible legal hassle. Opens fine either from strong side ITWB or pocket. The over all feel of the knife smacks of more attention than any of the Emersons I have handled with the exception of early first run Commanders. If you've been wondering whether to get one of these or not, get on the phone and get one, you will not be disappointed.
I appreciate Emerson listening to what rear world operators wanted. The product turned out spectacularly. Just make the scales a bit thicker.
