Perfect Oil?

For years I would lube the pivot on my folders with military CLP or a Lithium Grease. One day at work I was cleaning my Leatherman and didn't have my normal gun cleaning kit with me. One of the guys suggested that I try using paper shredder oil. All I can say is that stuff is crazy! It makes everything I use it on feel like it’s rolling on ball bearings. I have been using the stuff for months now and it out performs everything else I have. There may be a down side but so far I have not found one. Crazy, considering some of the oils I use are $15-$20 per can and shredder oil cost only $4. Most office supply stores carry it and the highest price I have seen was six bucks. If you haven’t tried paper shredder oil I dare you too. Let me know what you think.

I read that too. There are synthetic versions as well. Although I have yet to find any info on them, I have seen them for sale. The oil I bought at the office store is a generic store brand, probably not synthetic. There is no description on the label. All I know is, I put it on my Leatherman about 4 months ago and it feels like I cleaned and lubed it yesterday. Seems like CLP dissipates after a month or two, most noticeably on my pistol. I clean my carry gun every month unless I fire it. Lithium grease works great but I found for best results I have dismantle whatever I am working on. All I have to do with shredder oil is put a few drops in the pivot, work it around and let it sit overnight. In the morning all the dirt and grime has come to the outside and all I have to do is wipe it off. If it's really dirty I use a piece of paper to get in between the blade and the frame.

In my gun kit I have CLP, TW25b Grease and TW2500. I have used Militec-1 on guns before but not knives. I'll give it a try, always looking for something better. The shredder oil seems to work better on my knives than gun oils. The second best is this stuff called Gibbs but it's kind of hard to find. I am no expert though, just an end user posting his observations. No one should take anything I say as gospel truth.

Is Militec-1 the same as military CLP? On of the guys at work swears it is and I am not sure.

No they are not. Militec is designed to work as a dry-impregnated lube which is heat activated. Check out their site for more specifics.

Wouldn't be suprised to see recent vets refer to Militec as CLP, but traditionally CLP has been more along the lines of Break-Free ot Triflow.

Yeah, I got out of the Army last year. The guy that made the bet ets'd about 3 months ago. He's a jarhead. We have a friendly rivalry.

cool, OP, thanks for the tip. i'll give it a shot, next time i'm at Office Depot. i've been through a ton of different lubes and so far (believe it or not) my favorite is Otis lol

Well so far there have been no negative posts. Has anyone tried this stuff yet? I am curious to read some one else’s opinion on this.
