I've been trying to find the perfect size traditional knife for years. At first, I was torn between modern folders with 3" blades, 3.5" blades or 4" blades. For awhile, I carried one with an almost 4.5" blade! I was wondering why I leaned to one side! I also carried the smaller version of this design too. Over the years, I came to appreciate a fixed blade more than a modern folder, and the slicing capabilities of a slipjoint. Now, I carry a couple slipjoints on me, in varying sizes. My Damascus peanut from Carl, an ebony Tribal Spear and my Victorinox classic alox on my key ring. Other than that, I will usually have my black alox pioneer nearby for dirty jobs. I will sometimes substitute my Larock dogleg jack or Lanny's Clip and leave the Tribal Spear at home. Most of the time, it's the Pioneer, peanut and classic that get most of the grunt work. I guess the others are just there to look pretty. Like I said above, in lieu of that modern folder, of which I'm down to three and soon two and only those for aesthetic reasons, I have a smaller fixed blade. That fixed blade that I bring along, but rarely have on my belt outside of home, is my Scott Gossman Kephart. 3.5" CPM154 blade with micarta scales, it is a great knife. I get more use out of it than my Tribal or other similar sized knives.
My collection is pretty much around the same size as the Tribal, I have a few larger and a few smaller knives. Fixed blades, everything from huge choppers to small neck knives. But for knives that actually get used, I've found you can't beat a fixed blade, peanut, SAK combo. I work in an office that frowns on knives, even though we have a rule of 2.5" blade or less. When I get home, I use my knives for odd jobs. Last night my peanut did duty cutting electrical tape to fix my heater motor in my truck (need to get rid of these knives and buy a new truck). I really enjoy looking at slipjoints with a blade of around 3", like the Zulu/tribal, LC etc. I just can't fault what works for me.
These darn transplanted Texans have a big influence on people.
All that said, I have a custom shadow Zulu on order, a custom gunstock jack on order, a custom peanut on order and a few others down the road. Scouring the interwebz for a stag Tribal Spear, and have a buddy who wants to sell me his Gossman fixed blade trapper Bobby Plude design. I haven't found that enlightenment phase our pal Carl has
