Typhoon Monica, being called a perfect storm by the press, is bearing down on Darwin with winds of up to 218 mph. Typhoon Monica is reported to be far more destructive than Typhoon Larry whick struck the sparsely populated Cairns area in northern QL last month causing over $1 billion in damage. The city of Darwin was nearly destroyed by Typhoon Tracy in 1974 and homes constructed since must be Typhoon Coded to withstand a Category 4. Monica has lessened somewhat after passing over northern QL but may strike Darwin as a Cat 4 or 5 typhoon this afternoon.

Sydney Morning Herald: Warning: Monica's a Monster!

May all our mates down under and their families stay safe and and may any needed recovery response be swift and effective.

To make it a really perfect storm, it would blow over and go rain somewhere else. :(

Stay dry, guys.

It's been downgraded to a category 2 and is heading south now, so it looks like Darwin will be spared the brunt of it - although they'll still cop 160kph winds.

It will be still worth watching Monica however. Cyclones that come across this low have a habit of reforming and hitting the West Oz coast.

Lucky the population is sp sparse up there - if it was Florida it would have flattened a million trailer parks...and what would Jerry Springer do for subject matter then.:D

I've just returned from a trip to that part of the world and after one of the busiest cyclone seasons in history it's amazing to see all that normally arid country looking so lush.
