Does anyone know when the perforated phosphor bronze washers were transitioned into the Small Sebenza 21's?

I took down my sebenza for the first time today, and found out that it has the plain washers. My sebenza was born on march 31st, i had assumed that the perforated phosphor bronze washers were used by then.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it's only the new Large Sebs that have been getting them. I don't recall reading about any new Small Seb owners posting about perforated washers in theirs. My April 26 2010 Small 21 does not have them either. My guess is tooling, the 'Zaan and the Large Seb may share same size washers. I don't have a 'Zaan but that's my guess :)

I haven't pulled my new small seb 21 apart, but I can see that one of the washers have perforations. I can make out on the non locking side there are perforations as I rotate the blade. Mine was born on June 24, 2010.

It looks like they are different sizes on each side. The locking side looks to have a smaller washer than the non locking side. (not sure if I'm seeing things though.)

You are correct. The lock side has a smaller washer then the other side. Only the Umnumzaan both washers are the same size.

Huh... the washers were introduced with the umnumzaan in 2008, and ours are only a couple of months apart... i wonder why mine has plain ones.

From a quick search here in this forum, it seems like the large seb's started getting the perf washers around the end of December 2009. The posts I read seemed to indicated that CR had to work through their inventory of existing solid washers for the small sebs before they would start putting in perforated ones. Has anyone looked at a small that has a newer manufacture date than March 2010?

My small insingo was born on April 29, 2010 and I have the perforated washers.

My large 21 has the perforated washers, and my small 21 does not. The small is actually smoother. This may be because the small is broken in, but I'm not convinced that there is a substantial benefit to having the perforated washers.

The perforated washers isn't there to make it any smoother. It's to help retain the grease longer.

Yes it seems that the preforations in the washers hold in the grease when you rinse in under water. The tolerances are so tight, it seems that the grease cannot escape the holes (or it takes a lot longer) when flushed out with water or compressed air.

I just took apart my small (regular washers) and Large 21 (perf washers). No difference in smoothness between them after a clean / lube.

Aesthetically I like the solid washers though. :)

My only experience of the new washers is in my Large Snakewood Sebbie which I sent in for a refurb and it came back with them fitted.

They certainly hold the grease well during use and occasional wettings under the tap but use a fair amount more grease during reassembly so it all works out even in my loveometer for them, in comparison with the old solid ones. As far a changes to smoothness goes, there's no substitute for a few thousand openings and closings so get at it :D

Here's a picture, sorry it's poor quality taken indoors on a dull day but it'll show anyone who doesn't know what the new perforated washers look like;
