Although I'm hanging around the porch for a few months now, I'm still pretty much a new guy. I don't post as much as I'd like to although I do check the Traditional Knife section almost daily to watch all your beautiful knives and learn from your vast knowledge. I don't know many of you as good I perhaps should by now or would like to. Might blame that on being Slovene, they say we're a bit cold sometimes ...

Anyway, I was more than pleasently surprised when I got jc57's muskrat last month, this forum is quite an odd and rare generous and friendly place in the big dark sea of the internet, if I may put it this way. Inspired by the constant action on the site, I talked something about making a giveaway, didn't I? Well, I have just a bit more than a handful of knives really, but now already I don't use much else than my peanut and muskrat. I decided to give one of my old ones away, but there's a catch to it.

Here's the deal: I offer you a project for that's what it sure is. Big or small, that's for you to decide. I have an electrician's knife I bought on a fleamarket a few years back that's been sitting in my drawer ever since. It's a single stainless spear point blade with those "wire-cutter-thingy" on the kick (tang?). (excuse my bad knowledge of the terminology, I'm doing my best) :o I'm now in university, so I'm home and with my knives only for weekends. I don't have the knowledge nor tools to do what I'd like, but perhaps someone else might. I'd like someone to get this knife and use it. It has some issues, the blade is somewhat scrached, it needs a sharpening, probably an oil bath for the wood scales and a good cleaning of the interior, perhaps tighten it a bit if neccessary and so on. I trust you'll know what to do with it more than I do. I know you guys are mostly used of way better quality knives, not some neglected communist era Eastern European stuff, but imo this fellow offers some good potential for a nice user if someone is to spend some time polishing it up.

Like said, wooden scales, brass head and liners, stainless blade, length unknown (I forgot to measure it yesterday, it's a bit bigger than a Case Muskrat, if that's any refference - somewhere between 4 and 4.5 " maybe?), one bigger crack along the spring at the very bottom. Otherwice very nice wood, at least to my eyes.

Should anyone be interested, just write so and I'll randomly pick one, should there be more than one although I'm pretty sure you won't be waiting in line for this one ...
I realise Christmas is slowly aproaching and everyone's busy, but I hope to find a home for this knife where it will get used some.

Again, I apologise, this is not the sort of GAW you usually see.

Best regards,
Jean

That's a very interesting GAW. I'd actually be quite interested in trying to fix that knife. I've never tried anything like that before, but I'd definitely like to.

Wow, we already have our first victim, um, I mean participant. :D

I'll let this going for, say, a week and then choose someone randomly. This way it will probably still arrive before Christmas, it's probably going to end as a intercontinental thing anyway.

OK luskrb, thank you for paticipating.

I'll close this tomorrow and announce the "winner".

Sorry this has not generated more interest Jean. Not an entry please, I have too many knives as it is! Just wanted to say thanks

Hey jean. Not sure how I missed this.

I wouldn't mind attempting a project like that. I'll go in also under the pretense that I could very well ruin it, worst case. Best case, I end up with a shop knife, or I give it away after a first time reslab lol.

I love the idea of this GAW....

I have entered in a couple recently and don't want to just enter all of them, so this is not an entry. I can dig the premise here though, one of my favorite things is refurbing old tools and knives (mostly axes and hatchets)

Hopefully someone puts a little time into that, the "wire cutter thingy" is a neat addition to it, and could turn out really cool.

Thanks for participating, SVTFreak.

William Cody, if you change your mind, tell me untill sunday. Due to the recent responds I'll let it run one more day.

Jack, it's no problem. I was aware the whole time it wouldn't attract too many people. I understand you chaps are busy and the knife isn't much something. Still, I would like it to get "shiny" again. Hopefully the future owner will share a picture or two with us, after the work is done.

Fair enough sir, I'm in then.

If I win it I will post up some pics after refurbing it up, maybe even toss up a GAW of my own.

Thanks ISKRA

So that's it, I'm closing this. I put a couple of numbers in and one was randomly chosen. According to the result, our WINNER IS WilliamCody. Congratulations, sir! Please contact me per e-mail so I can send you the project.

I also thank everyone else who participated!

Best regards,
Žan/Jean

Awesome! Thanks ISKRA I will send my info to you.

I will post some progress pics as I go. This place is great. You (and collectively to the forum in general) have inpired me to do a GAW on the Buffalo Bills Forum (yeah, yeah I know... http://boards.buffalobills.com/showthread.php?535772-***2016-BBMB-Holiday-Giveaway!*** ), and once I get my vacuum chamber finished (ie. the parts come in), I will post a GAW for my first stabilized blocks. That's the one (if only) thing I can contribute around here, so many amazing knife makers and hobbyists.

Contrats, William!

Thanks Netguy.

You gaw was the first I've ever seen like this (my only experience with social media besides here is the buffalo bills forum). Very inspiring how you can still find genuine, good people; even on the internet. Who knew?

No problem, WilliamCody, I'm glad the knife will find a new home. I too was struck by the generosity of our members. I was gifted basically a new knife from jc57, which I now regularly carry and love to use. I wanted to return something to the community, but at the moment this is the only thing I can spare. I know a knife in better condition would be more appealing and would cause greater interest. In my GAW I wanted to find a better home for one of my old knives and at the same time give someone the pleasure to create something new. I am already excited to see your pictures of work in progress, once you receive it, of course. Since it an intercontinental thing, the journey should take two to three weeks, so you'll have to be a bit patient.

Take your time, I understand the intercontinental mail take forever sometimes.

Besides that, I am knee deep in building Christmas presents right now anyway. But I am looking forward to fixing it up. I have a bunch of different woods I have been drying for awhile I think I'll do some scales for it out of either cherry, lilac, hickory, or walnut. Will be a fun experience, of that I am sure.

I managed to wrestle through the bazillion people in the post office today and send the package with the knife on its way. Fingers crossed. The lady said it should take five days and I was just "yeah, right ...". I think two weeks is more realistic. I also hope WilliamCody will be able to read my hand written letter, it was written rather in a hurry ...
