Howdy yall,

I posted something sort of similar in the general discussion forum yesterday, but I think its more appropriate here. I've always been a fan of bigger knives, thicker blades and less pointy designs. Even before I got into knives more extensively (a relatively recent thing), if you put two knives in front of me I would have always preferred that aesthetic. Now, after putting some middle of the road knives through their rotations, I know I prefer the utility of the bigger more durable blade shapes. All of that being said, I was never much of a spyderco guy. To me they ranged from impressive to less so, but for me my knife will always be my first available tool. If kindling needs hacked and I don't have a handy axe, my knife usually gets the task. Ditto most any other scenario that is within normal(ish) knife tasks. I really enjoy carrying a single folding knife and knowing that it can survive a wide range of uses.

I say all of the above to preface this- I think I may be in love with the sypderco TUFF. I sadly don't have the excessive income at the moment (think poor perpetual student) to indulge all of my knife desires, but I would like my next purchase to be heavy duty, durable, comfortable in large hands, from a reliable company, and something that I can EDC everyday (I don't mind size- even in a suit, but it can't be too obtrusive). Thanks to members of the forum here, I had ran down the lists and either included or excluded knifes, ranked them, read/watched countless reviews on them all, and I had finally settled on the zt300. Now, after discovering the TUFF, I think I may prefer it. Both seem to be great knives, and its rather likely over the next year I'll try to get both, but I would like to get one soon and which first is the question. I think I've seen all of the reviews around for both knives (including the spectacular review on the tuff by xavier), but I'd really like to hear about peoples experiences carrying the tuff both in hard use and EDC scenarios and especially from anyone who has and uses both the tuff and 300. Also, if anyone has both I would really really like to see them side by side!

I am also fairly new to the knife world but the first good knife i bought was the Endura 4 ffg and while i haven't cut trees down with it (actually i have cut saplings but that's a different story) and it has not failed me once. I do realize you probably do way more than I do and you prefer what you prefer, no worries. But I have yet to be let down by a spyderco, its whats in my pocket now, its what I carry in the field (I'm doing clinical's for my EMT basic lisence), and I trust it in the woods. I'm sure you'll fall in love with that hunk of steel and that little bug on the side.

Welcome to the dark side........
I know how it is to be a poor teen lol it's a common problem on here one that can only be fixed with time...
But hay what can you do?

The Tuff is an awesome design and I still need to get one.
There are tons of Spyderco's out there and I'm sure you can find many that would fit your likes.

However, between the 0300 and Tuff(I've owned the 0301) I would go with the Tuff. Better steel, I like the look better, etc.

I love the steel and I'm a big fan of the looks and blade shape. The more I research I put into knives and the more time I spend maintaining them the more the blade shape means to me. I really enjoy freehand sharpening and that ranges from impossible to a nightmare on the 301. I can deal with the AO, it isn't really a plus for me, but it isn't a negative either anymore. The shape was something I wasn't looking forward to though. The Tuff can be converted to left handed (A big plus for me), it has great steel (and a lot of it), a nice big handle and blade, and it looks like its relatively discrete in the pocket. I think I may have found a knife that I don't have even nitpicky complaints about.

EDIT: Though now I do have to master how to flick the spydercos open. At least I'll have (sort of) an excuse to open and close it for hours on end.
