I've been designing a custom chopper that will be made locally. I would like to use the Busse feature of putting a hole in the guard so I can connect a strap between it and the lanyard hole for retention while chopping. This is just a one-up and not for production. Is it possible to get permission to add the feature to my knife?

Your best bet is to call the shop and ask for Jerry.
