i saw these mentioned here somewhere in the archives, but haven't been able to find a source in the USA...

i bought one as a kid from a novelty catalog...it's a little square plastic container, maybe a couple inches square, that you fill with lighter fluid, and there's a screw-in metal "match" with a wick in it that sits inside the lighter fluid...to light it, you scrape the end along a flint mounted on the side of the unit...

anyone know if these are still made and where i might get one?

thanks...

I think you're writing about the coghlans flint match w/tender #8647. I had one as a kid that was all brass. Worked good, but was susceptible to wind as any flame is and you're still at the mercy of needing to add fluid.

I think the current source is BudK. Inexpensive, reliable, and even if you do run out of firewater, you still have a pretty good source of spark.:D

looks like the coghlan's thingy might be it too, Longbow...picture doesn't show it but looks like the same concept in the illustration on the package...

thanks to da both of yas!

I've got about 100 of these things here that I'll sell for a buck a piece plus shipping if anyone is interested. Mine are white plastic and they throw alot of spark.

i'm interested in a couple, Fred...shoot me an email to remind me -- i'll get back to you this weekend...

thanks..
