My black bladed super special priced Fred Perrin FB just arrived and I am very happy. I purchased the Bob Lum FB recently due to the same sale pricing and now have two very nice and totally different fixed blades from Spyderco. I have had a Moran upswept for a number of years now which I love.

A few musings on the Perrin, this knife is slightly larger then I thought it would be and way lighter. Especially after the Lum tanto which is quite a stout knife. The tang on the Perrin appears to be 3/4 as opposed to full, is this correct? The blade is super pointy and has the standard wicked sharp factory edge. The sheath appears to be solid though tthere isn't that resounding click that I like to hear from a kydex sheath. The teclok was mounted upside down for some strange reason, though I am not sure it makes any difference at all in regards to function. The handle feels great in sabre grip, very secure with deep choil but too my surprise not only feels good in edge out reverse but also edge in. I am thinking about having a sheath made and carrying this knife for drawpoint applications. In short its wicked light and nasty. Definetly calls for an IWB sheath. I like the heft and style of the Lum but the Perrin just screams CUT!

Yeah, I was thinking that myself. I just saw some basic g10 models and figured if the spydie feels as good as it does those have got to be awesome.

I have 10 or so customs from Fred and well they all are Different in looks they all “feel” great.I am waiting for my "new" black one to show got it as a extra. the sheaths are not the best on the fb04 ,but that go's for Fred's sheaths too(sorry Fred) so I have Mike at rivercity sheaths make new ones for them all.and draw point sheaths are his thing.

Thanx FB, there are three or four kydex sheath makers that have very good reps, Mike S included. I hope to get sheaths from each of them but as I like the Spydie/Perrin so much I think that will be the first from Mr. Sastre.

I'm carrying mine at this very moment, IWB, 11:00 (I'm lefty), suspended on a loop of gutted black para-cord. In trousers or any pants with room, the knife isn't even there. I tried it with Levi 501s and the sheath kinda pinched my family jewels. Overall though, a great method of carry. I admit that the sheath needs improvement, but it'll do for now. There's a photo sequence at realfighting.com of Fred himself carrying this way, but not with a Spyderco.

I thought at first that Spyderco was phasing out this model when they offered this great deal at the factory outlet, but now I hear that more might be available soon. Is this true, Sal? I'm tempted to get a twin brother to my first one if so. $49.95 including shipping is one of the best knife deals in a long time.

I've just got one of these as well.

Was wondering two things:

(1) Why is the blade slightly upswept? Is this to facilitate thrusting, back cutting, etc.? If so, in what grip?

(2) What is Drawpoint? I've heard that particular label used quite a lot. I realise that getting the tapes will probably answer that, but is there a basic principle it uses or asssumption that it is designed to exploit or overcome?

Perhaps I should rephrase that to: "what does drawpoint offer me?"

As soonas you get your tapes then you will know a bunch more then I but the basic concept as I understand it is a method utilizing edge in reverse grip techniques specificaly for the purpose of self defense. I think some of its advantages are gross motor movements, powerful downward plows and pulling techniques. Thats the little I know. I am sure there are others here much more familiar with the systems specific pros and cons.
