Which is better, the Emerson La Griffe with it's recurve blade or the Perrin Custom one with it's straight blade ? I have the chance to get each of them at the same price, specs are about the same as well.

well it's a kind of same debat like the tracker from TOPS or from Beck?
Emerson are fine but it's manufactured production.Fred Perrin's models are custom made and VERY well made, they cut like razor blade!
PLUS la Griffe is an original design from Fred PERRIN himself so why buy a copy when u can get the original and honestly a custom made have much more soul...
Personaly I have 3 different griffe models. An original from Fred Perrin, an Emerson and a Bear Claw from CRKT.
My favorit is clearly the one made by Fred himself, this model is truly "alive" in my hands.
Personaly if I had to choose only between a CRKT bear claw and a Emerson la griffe I will choose the CRKT!!! It fit my hand much better and cut as good if even't beeter than the Emerson model!(for half the price...)
Enjoy!

Make sure the real LaGriffe from Perrin is "real." That price break is too good to be true. There have been some Perrin LaGriffe's in non-steel versions (maybe G-10) and these may be low enough in price to compete with the Emerson. I've never seen a steel Perrin that wasn't considerably more in price than an Emerson.

Perrin custom La Griffe, if it's one of his hand forged blades. They'll hold a sharper edge than the production Emerson ones.

I agree with Brownshoe!there is a cheap model in G-10 and a lot of copy's!
If you want a good adress to order some of Fred's knives you can call at the best knife shop in Paris: +33 1 43 43 46 90
Ask for ISIDORE, he is specialist and good friend of Perrin's knives.

dont worry about the price, it's because i'm in europe. for one, fred's knives are at a normal price here, and for two emerson knives are a lot more expensive than in the US, which explains the same price.

i think i'll be getting the original then...

Go for the Perrin one! I was at the BKS show in Gembloux Belgium where I had a chat with Fred. I picked up one of his slightly bigger neck knives with a clip point in 440C (for the stainless aspect as I will be wearing this close to my body) but a friend of mine picked up a chisel ground (but secondary bevel on both sides), hand hammered, carbon steel la Griffe, with a slight recurve in the blade! Very sharp knives both good fit and finish and the sheets make te spyderco etc.... production ones pale in comparison! No play at all but the blades come out smooth as butter! Very nice knives.
