It's supposed to be a really good year for viewing that wonderful August display of celestial fireworks, the Perseids. Here's the NASA viewing information. The Perseids always bring back pleasant memories for me. I used to do yardwork and odd jobs for a friend of mine when I was in high school. Every year he would have a huge Perseid party where he invited a bunch of friends up for a night of food, fun, and stargazing. I used to him get his place ready for the event. He had a nice pond that sat back behind a huge old barn. Very rustic. I'd mow the perimeter of the pond so people could camp out. It was mostly mint growing around the edge, and I'll never forget the powerful aroma of mint that filled the air when I was done mowing. Of course, the real show was supposed to take place when this beautiful gal named Zoe practiced yoga nude by the pond in the morning after everyone else had left. Never did get to see that show though.
I've got friends coming up Friday, so hopefully the Perseids will last for a few days past the peak. I picked up an almost-new thermarest pad at a yard sale this weekend for two bucks, so I'll probably try it out for Perseid watching.
