I want a new folder which could be used for edc and emergency defence.I live in australia and i can get either a spyderco persistance or kershaw junkyard dog for $45au.which would you choose?

That's a big contrast. Persistance is quite small and JYD is quite big from
what I know. If you like a bigger blade go for the JYD. Smaller folder to
carry around then go Persistance.

I agree with you knifezoid about blade size but JYDs carry flat or small IMHO. :)

The JYD 2 is rather big but the JYD 1 is not too big for edc at all, less than a three inch blade I believe.

So it seems the JYD is more heavy duty and would be good for an edc, what about self defence? is 3 inches enough?

I own a lot of similar Kershaws and the Persistence. If it were my only EDC that doubled as defense I’d have to go with the JYD. Personally I prefer my Kimber for defense but you don’t have that option.
The Persistence is a very good carry knife especially for its blade shape & how it cuts but it is a little slow on deployment and the blade is a bit thinner than I’d care for if I might have to stab something with it.

Well I have a little plan to get a few knives within a couple months. My girlfriend can sometimes feel like a little unprotected so she actually LIKES me having a knife on me.So i want to get a heavier duty knife to replace my centofante 3,but later i'll use the excuse that the JYD isnt very good for defence and buy a CS Spartan :D

Unfortunately pepper spray is only legal for Law Enforcement guys so i cant get that either :thumbdn:

Yeah tell me about it :thumbdn:. Australia is starting to turn into another UK, they just passed a law banning all assisted openers

Didin't New Hampshire just passed law that allowed people to own, collect and carry every knife, including auto's? It kinda sucks with tighter knife law's but we still have plenty good choices... Like Spyderco Urban and Spyderco UKPK

Feeling protected and actually being protected are very different things. Good luck.

I know i can take care of her but she likes the added security of me having a knife somewhere on my person,it would be mainly edc but if i need to use it for defence i can.

I think your self defense training should dictate which type of knife you use. If you don't have training, I think the question is like asking whether you should use a brick or a rock to hit someone on the head with. Regarding lock security, both should be equally secure generally speaking. For EDC I like the JYD design, but I haven't held a Persistence so I can't say for sure that I like the JYD better. My vote goes to the JYD.

It's a shame that you can potentially fatally wound someone with a knife in self defense but you can't use pepper spray. A high powered flashlight along with some training might do you some good. Plus, though I like knives better, I use my light much more for everyday uses.

These 2 knives are pretty different, it really comes down to what you prefer:

JYD: Made in America, Sandvik 14c28n steel, frame-lock, Flipper opening, 410 stainless handle, 4.0 ounces, tip down carry only, batman style pocket clip (easy on pockets, but kinda flashy).

Persistence: Made in China, 8Cr13Mov, liner lock, spyderhole opening, G10 handle, 3.3 ounces, tip up or tip down carry, typical spyderco pocket clip, nice and simple looking.

Personally of these two I would buy the JYD, because I believe it is better made, from better materials, with a stronger lock/handle with the downside being an added .7 ounces. I've never been a fan of stainless handles because they are slippery and heavy, but the JYD has pretty good ergo's to make up for that. I like the flipper deployment but if you want it for self defense the spyderhole is much more reliable and fool-proof, its almost impossible to fumble a spyderco while opening it in an emergency.

My honest opinion is to forget them both, spend a little more and get a FFG or Waved Delica, you won't regret it.

Excellent review and advice! +1!

I own the JYD II Composite Edge and the Spyderco Tenacious, both are the bigger versions of the JYD and the Persistence. I like them both. For EDC I prefer the JYD II , but for a self-defense scenario I would carry Delica Wave or better yet a Endura Wave!
