I looking for something in the that is size of a Persistence but has something with better steel and not Chaparral price. Cat maybe?

Have you tried the Dragonfly2? Better steel and amazing ergonomics for just a few more bucks than the Persistence. I personally recommend the ZDP-189 version (for a bit more).

Sage is a tiny bit longer than persistence. The ergo's of the sage are far superior to persistence's for me.

Any of the sage series is going to be your best bet. The caly3 in zdp with cf scales or the native5 with s35vn would be great as well but for a bit more scratch. The standard frn/s30v native never really did it for me (I prefer the delica ffg) but a lot if people swear by it and its got a great reputation and like the native 5 is made right here in the USA.

I know you said no delica, but to be honest, the delica is the knife that fits your description the best. Is there a particular reason you're scratching the d4 ffg from the running?

Also, I know it may be sacrilege to mention this in the spyderco forum but the benchmade mini grip fits the bill to a "T". And its even available with a thumb hole (licensed by spyderco) so you don't have ti feel so bad for cheating on spyderco...:o

Hi Billb60 & Spyderinked,

Welcome to the Spydcerco forum.

Bill, The Tenacious serious of knives are all made in China with one of the best steels avaiable in China. We're working on trying to get some USA made steels into China, but it is a long process and we're not there yet.

With that being said, the major difference in price between the China made models and others is the exchange rate for the US dollar to the Chinese Yuan. (about 5 to 1).

In order to get to a "better" steel, the knives would have to be made somewhere other than China, so the costs go up very quickly. The knives made in Seki City, Japan are much higher as the Japanese Yen is currently stronger than the US dollar by about 20%, which means we pay about $1.25 for every Japanese dollar (Yen). The Euro is about the same so our knives made in Europe will also be up there. Our USA made modcels use very good steel, but again, the cost of mfr is much higher than China.

It's a big jump from "China made" to "anywhere else made".

Hope that helps.

Sal,

Thanks for warm welcome.

I so far have just three spydercos (par-2, delica 4, and just this week robin byrd) and all have been very high quality. Sure the byrd was a little stiff to open, out of the box, but after I broke it in and learned what I call the "spyderco flip" to open it the knife flips open just as smoothly as other two (I wasn't expecting that from a $25 knife with g-10 and 8cr13mov steel).

I'm just looking for something in between since there are SO MANY Spyderco knives it's hard to know all of them but, was looking for more input to find what I want.

Thanks
John

Sal makes a great point about the quality of the 8cr13mov steel. People act like it's junk, but it is equivalent to AUS8A, and it was not that long ago that even the best Spydercos were AUS8A. There is no reason why a Persistence can't last many years.

I'd agree that the Sage 1 is the best option other than a Delica. However, you can occasionally find a Native 5 for under $100. You might like that.

What about just a regular Native? S30v steel, similar blade length, lightweight but solid and just a great all around knife for its size.
