Persistence question

I have carried Spyderco knives for going on 20 years. My first was an Endura with the Clipit molded into the handle that I picked up some time in early 1991. My second was a Copilot that was a constant companion (EDC) and money clip for many years. I have used both knives on and off since and they have performed admirably. I still have both knives. Last year I got into knives in a big way and found myself drawn to Benchmade, Kershaw/ZT, Blackhawk and some others. Having had Spyderco I didn't pay much attention to them, but from what I see here Spyderco has come a long way with a very loyal following.

Today I take delivery of my first recently made Spyderco, a Persistence. My understanding is that this knife is not US made but made in China. My question is how representative of Spyderco quality is the Persistence? I'm familiar with how the Chinese made Red Class Vex stacks up against US made Benchmades and wonder if it is similar with Spyderco and the Persistence. If the Chinese made Persistence is noticeably a cut below US made Spydercos then I will reserve judgment.

Thanks for any thoughts. The knife should be here within the hour.

The Persistence and Tenacious are excellent values for what they cost. Workmanship is good. I would put it on a par with Spyderco's lower end offerings from Japan and Golden. Materials, while decent, are of somewhat lower quality than those currently used on Spyderco knives made in Japan, Taiwan, and the US.

Totally agree with Paul. I actually just picked up a Persistence and it has been in my pocket for the last few days. I have many US and Japan made Spydercos and the Persistence was actually a very pleasant surprise in comparison to the higher end knives. F&F is very good, blade came perfectly centered, lock up is perfect with no blade play in any plane and, as with all my Spydies, it came hair-popping sharp. The action is not quite as smooth as most of my others, but overall, it's a phenomenal value for the money.

Let us know YOUR thoughts on it when you get it.:)

From what I have handled, I agree with Billy516 and The Deacon. Excellent bang for the buck for sure.

I agree.
I own 18 spyderco's since my manix2 came in a couple of hours ago, but the tenacious is a knife I grab alot. It just feels good (and it was my first spyderco). It's little brother the persistence is just a bit smaller, which is better for me as it is more easily accepted by people (in the Netherlands). But it's just as good if you ask me. For that amount of money, it's a great deal.

As for quality, you definitely feel the difference with the US made spydercos, but your wallet feels it too :)

Wow, you guys said it all for me. I am very impressed with the knife. This knife may be one of the best values going. Billy561s assessment matches mine exactly. I've been looking for something not to like about it and am so far unsuccessful. I got a chance to carry it today and I was very pleased. With the belly on that blade I'm anticipating some good cutting. It seems to be an exceptionally well balanced knife. It's a heck of a lot of knife for $34.

This knife has really whetted my appetite to own at least a few more Spydercos.

Got 1 for edc around the ranch, the 1st time I used it to cut open a bale of hay I was impressed.Even more so when after closing it one handed,I noticed the blood dripping down my arm.Didn't even feel it nick my thumb. Now that's a good knife!Gonna get big brother for my on duty carry blade.

If there wasn't the word "China" on the blade, I wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't made in the US or Japan like other Spydies.

I know some folks say that Tenacious and Persistence are just Spyderco branded versions of Byrd knives. I disagree.

Byrd knives are well made high value knives. But the fit and finish of the Chinese Spydies is of much higher quality:
- The polish on the liners, screws, and clip
- flush fitting scales and liners
- Heavy duty liners and good blade retention
- FFG
- Better texture of the G10 scales
- Multi-position clips
