Need your help on this one folks. Given the following list of 6 knives, could you rank them in your personal preference from 1 - 6 ( 1 being the most prefered ,to 6 being the least ). I am not after any input as to your reasons for choosing one before the other, just an exercise on personal preference.

The following is listed in alphabetic order only
Al Mar Sere 2000, Benchmade 710HS, Buck Strider 880SP, Camillus Dominator, Emerson Super CQC7, Spyderco Military. If you have only handled 2, 3 or 4 of these, rank them accordingly and leave the others out.

Thanks in advance.

1. Benchmade 710HS/Camillus Dominator
2. Spyderco Military/Al Mar Sere 2000
3. Emerson Super CQC7
4. Buck Strider 880SP
yeah, I fudged a little...too hard to choose

Being the Benchmade fan that I am, I would rank them

710HS
Sere 2000
Military
Dominator

Out of the 6 these are the only ones that I have handled.

BM 710
Cam. Dominator
Al Mar
Buck
Emerson
I haven't handled the Spyderco, but it would most likely fall somewhere in the middle. If specific uses where involved these rankings would change, but in general it applies.

Stockman,
1. Spyderco military
2. Al Mar SERE 2000
3. Benchmade 710HS
4. Camillus Dominator

That being said I would recomend any of the above, great knives and great steel. I don't really care for tanto blades so the emerson is out. The Buck is built like a tank and feels almost as good in the hand as a tank.

Tom

I'd be perfectly happy with the Al Mar, Benchmade, or Spyderco with a slight edge going to the 710. The others don't appeal to me.

Jack

Go Crows. :D

Out of your list, the Benchmade is the only one I like because I don't care for liner-locks or frame-locks.

The Axis-lock is just so much better.

Allen.

i own the buck and it is a great knife. super strong lock up. i know that the survival pros say the al mar is the "best" folder one can buy.

Thanks for the replies so far, looking for as much feedback as possible. Reason for the question is that there is not 1 decent knife shop in Perth WA, a city with a population of about 1.5 million, which leads me to 2 possible scenarios, the first is that there is a lack of knife nutisism here, or secondly a business opportunity is ripe for the picking. Just trying to gain a rough idea on popularity of brands and models, as this could be useful down the track.

I don't think there is a decent knife shop anywhere in Australia. If there is I'd like to hear about it!

I just don't think we have the population for it. Most "knife shops" concentrate on kitchen and other household knives, a few SAKs and then maybe a tiny number of smaller good production folders.

Welcome to the club. We have exactly the same problem here in NZ. Our whole population is only 4 mil (and about 99% are sheeple), so tough going. Some days I think that the US is the only place on earth that stocks any blades....

Greg

I've used them all-
Slicer- Military
Fit ans finish- SERE 2000
All-around hard use- CQC7

20+ million in Aus is a good start. Aussie's and Kiwi's in general are outdoor's type who love to fish, hunt, camp, hike, sail, drink and fight, surely this is a sound basis for developing some kind of knife appreciation. The online services from the US is great, but Im sure most would prefer to buy local and see and feel a product prior to purchasing.
"build it and they will come" - maybe??

You live in Perth - have you tried Keith Spencer from the AKC.

Re your list:

Spydie
Buck
Emerson

Further re Australian Knife Shops - I believe the problem lies with the fact that we do not have an Australian Knife Industry as such so there is no competition and we have to depend on forums such as these to keep up with the info from the US as no knife shop in OZ could afford to stock even half of all brands and all models from the US. My US catalogue has 738 pages in it which includes 457 pages of "sport" knives. The other problem is that we do not have a large "educated" knife population eg I had a customer in the other day who said that the Spyderco Native was plastic rubbish whilst the Rough Rider Trapper (I sell around the $25 mark) was a "real" knife.

I have similar problems to you in that when you see a knife you think you will like you can't get to "feel" it. Maybe with the advance of technology one day we will have 3D "touchy feely" internet and that will solve our problems.
