Personal preference

I have been watching lots and lots of youtube videos recently and it just reminded how much personal preference plays a role in how much people like knives. It also reminded me of how many of my personal preferences are well abnormal or at least not stuff reviewers pay much attention too or even diss. Well that and things that dont bother me.

Here are some of them:

1) I like smooth handles more than aggressively textured G10. I have found that out of the knives I carry most of the handles are smooth G-10 or even metal, which are things that people like nutnfancy for example constantly put down. I find that the smoothness just feels better in my hand and I have never had a problem holding on to knives even using them hard camping in the rain. this is probably my biggest difference than most reviewers, I keep hearing purchase this and traction, that but I havent had a problem with even the slickest knife handles. And at that my BM kulgera is far more comfortable for me than my spyderco mini manix and my para military, not because of the handle shape; the spydies beat it in that department but because of the handle texture. Its not that the aggressiveness hurts or irritates sensative hands, its just that it is unneccessary IMHO and I'm not a huge fan of the sandpaper feeling.

2) jimping does not matter to me at all. Once again most of knives have smooth backs to their blades. I dont cut in a manner that makes my thumb move. When i cut the force of the cut is transefered perpendicular to the edge back into my thumb not forwards or backwards so my thumb really does not have a cance of slipping. And I think jimping could ruin the looks of knives such as my BM 943 and 930.

3) Deployment speed does not matter much. Yes, I admit it can be usefull at times and I ghetto waved my minimanix for a gadget factor type deal. But if its one hand opening it is fast enough IMHO. Smoothness is what matters to me, if a knife is lightningfast but feels gritty I wont like it much. Oh and I will add comfort as well, that too is more important than speed.

4) I like a solid feeling knife. Weight doesnt matter to me as much as a solid feel, so I actually like a heavier knife. I know the solidness doesnt matter much in the function of a knife because I dont abuse my blades but something about it feels right.

5) Lock strength does not matter to me at all. I couldnt care less how strong a lock is, because I treat all my knives like they are slipjoints and dont cut in a way that would cause lock failure and the blade to close on my hands. If it keeps it closed with finger pressure on the spine of the knife it is strong enough. I just realized how much this contradicts with my last thing. With that said lack of play is very important to me.

6) I like knives that show wear. I dont mind painted pocket clips or anodized metal because i like my knife to show character and look used and carried. When i get a new knife I always carry it until it shows a decent amount of wear, before I think about switching and I constantly admire the scratches and scuffs. I hate it when people say they use their knives hard and I look at it and it looks pristine.

well those are my unusal preferences/things I dont care about. What are some of yours?

There are a couple of things, that, like you, are just preference.

1. I prefer longer knives. i do not own any knives, that i have paid for, at least, that are under 3 inches. i do not see the point. i want it to be able to reach and cut whatever the job requires, and so i prefer 3 inches at least. my daily carry is a ZT 0200, which leads me into my second point.

2. I like G10, but i have been spoiled by the 3D G10 on my spec bump and 0200. as far as i am concerned, the only way i am buying a knife is if it has either great ergos or if it is 3D machined.

3. I just prefer flippers. thumbstuds work, but i just like flippers.

4. I hate huge pocket clips. give me a ZT pocket clip and i am happy. it can be easily camouflaged under a sweatshirt, with only the tip sticking out.

5. I like knives that are a lot bigger, really pretty, or a little more different. most knives look the same, and they are all about the same size. i want something that does not look like something anybody could make.

6. I want it to be thick. i will not use an edc for slicing tomatoes. i want ti for hacking random stuff and as a last-ditch backup. also, if the fit hits the shan, i want to be ready with something i can trust if i can not get back home to get something more suitable.

7. for liner locks, thick liners are a must. i need to have confidence in the thing that i am using. if it fails, then i want what caused it to fail to be something that would have broken a fixed blade.

With regard to the YouTube videos you mention, this is the thing that immediately comes to mind. I care how effectively a knife opens with one hand because I frequently find the need to open a knife with one hand while holding something with the other. It doesn't need to open in a nanosecond and I don't need to look "cool" while I'm doing it. I want to be able to grip it comfortably and manipulate the thumb stud or hole and have the blade open smoothly. While there are some guys on YouTube who actually review the design, materials, and overall product, too many seem to spend the entire time flicking the knife open and closed.

If it don't have a wave (or can't be waved in the garage), I don't carry it.

Exceptions are fixed blades... and the Case blue bone small toothpick that lives next to my "emergency can" of Copenhagen.

1. I agree about the G-10. It is really hit or miss with me and I have never really felt it was necessary. I have been carrying one of the Strider CC's with smooth G10 and have done some cutting with blood and "gunk" on my hands and had no slippage.

2. Personally I love a nice aggressive jimping if it allows me to get a little more control.

3. Totally agree about deployment speed. As long as you can easily open one handed.

4. I am totally with you on having a solid beefy feel. I know a lot of folks favor the more "gentleman" carry EDC, but I like to EDC for that worst day of your life.

5. I need a strong lock, I have scars on my fingers to remind me why :)

6. I dont care if my knife show wear, it shows that they have had a full life.

It all depends on how you use your knife and what you put it through. Mine can get used hard but a lock failure is not something I've experienced. I'm not going to go as far as some people here who say if you need a strong lock you are using your knife wrong.

And it is nice to know a knife can handle a lot, it just isnt a deal maker/breaker for me.
