Personal victory!!! I made the knife shaving sharp!

So when I was a kid my grandfather taught me how to sharpen my Swiss Army Knife. I was satisfied with using a regular stone until I saw a Lansky in a catalog one day and wanted one. I swore that someday when I could mow enough lawns to earn the then lofty sum of $25.00 I would purchase one.

Low and behold I purchase a Lansky and I use it for years and I think I am the heat. Little did I know that I was letting my free hand sharpening skills get away from me and what the consequences would be.

Later on I was attending the USMC Jungle Warfare Training Center course and in the middle of the survival exercise I lost certain parts to my Lansky and thus it wouldn't work. So there I was in the middle of the jungle with zero free-hand sharpening skills. From then on I vowed to get my free hand skills back.

So today, after awhile of on-again / off-again sharpening practice I was, for the first time, able to get a blade "shaving sharp". The hairs popped off my arm. I am victorious.

Just thought I would share.

I've heard a lot of people say that they cannot sharpen a knife free hand. I have been doing it for so long that when I tried to get one of those guided shareners I failed horribly. I guess it all depends on how you learn.

Yeap ! Good for you bud :) I was taught how to do it free hand and I still do it this way , granted I am not a master and it takes me a while to get it sharp SHARP :D

Stan,

Just a warning. You've now engaged in a highly addictive activity. I'm afraid you are on the slippery slope like the search for the perfect golf swing or sub one MOA group.

I suggest you STROP now while you have the chance! I know, your probably saying to yourself, "I can strop any time, I'm not addicted." You need to strop immediately, if you find you can't do it alone then there are people here that can help you. Mac

Heck yes, that's awesome! :D Congrats. I still use an angle guide on my stones, but I figure it's building up muscle memory... I hope.

I have tried to use the Lansky type sharpeners, but with very little success. I learned free hand, and find it much better. Last fall while moose hunting, I showed my hunting partners just how valuable a razor sharp knife can be when gutting and skinning a large animal. Do you use a steel? That is what i use to put the razor edge on, and find it works very well. Now, there will never be a dull knife in the house!!

I used one of those three-stone systems on the wooden triangular block that you can rotate to which stone you want.

Thanks everyone for the congratulations. I appreciate it.

Congrats!

I'm particularly fond of a Cermaic hone to sharpen a knife... All of a sudden you can get the tip just as sharp as the belly... and you dont HAVE to lay it over and tag a stone.

Stone works just as well, but it sure is easier from where I'm standing to hold a hone thats a foot long and go to it... makes a cheap knife pop hairs!
