So when I was a kid my grandfather taught me how to sharpen my Swiss Army Knife. I was satisfied with using a regular stone until I saw a Lansky in a catalog one day and wanted one. I swore that someday when I could mow enough lawns to earn the then lofty sum of $25.00 I would purchase one.
Low and behold I purchase a Lansky and I use it for years and I think I am the heat. Little did I know that I was letting my free hand sharpening skills get away from me and what the consequences would be.
Later on I was attending the USMC Jungle Warfare Training Center course and in the middle of the survival exercise I lost certain parts to my Lansky and thus it wouldn't work. So there I was in the middle of the jungle with zero free-hand sharpening skills. From then on I vowed to get my free hand skills back.
So today, after awhile of on-again / off-again sharpening practice I was, for the first time, able to get a blade "shaving sharp". The hairs popped off my arm. I am victorious.
Just thought I would share.
