I get a lot of email requests for custom designs, where they want to know a price. When I reply back that I would need to see a rough sketch with dimensions, I never hear back. How do you do a price quote without knowing the size?

Sounds easy, just change your Custom Title...;)

I hear you. I get customers all the time that have me come and look at their site, then say "how much?". Listen, guys, I'm pretty good, but I do have to sit down and put it on paper to work up a number.

That's a tough call, though. I guess you could give them a range if they can at least tell you an estimated length and thickness of blade, however, I do know that more goes into it than that. I do get alot of inquiries, and when I give them some basic info, I sometimes never hear back. Oh well.

Hey John,I need a quote on a knife that will clean a fish, cut a car in half & enable me to read minds.
Oh yeah..it needs it to be about as long as a doohicky, but shorter than thingofabob & done by next wednesday if not sooner.
Thanks,you're the best man.

Tire kickers. If they have no idea what a custom knife costs, how serious can they be about purchasing? There exists a percentage of the population who want everything but want to give nothing for it. Recently I was selling a used knife on the forum. I posted pictures etc. One guy wants pictures of the centering, are there any blemishes anywhere; do I have all the packaging and paperwork; are there any scratches----for like a #@%& $40 knife.

Sorry for the rant John but I think there are people who would just waste your time. Tire kickers.

an alternative would be to start working on that time machine I guess, but they'd have to commit to buy for it to work, drat!

John, tell them that your psychic knife designer premium rate is $100 for the first inch overall and $15/inch after that.
If they provide a drawing or detailed description regular rates will apply.

You could say that your knives run from $160 on the low end to $350 (or whatever) on the high end based on length, thickness and intricacies of the design in question.

It is a non-answer that will still give the "tire kicker" an idea of the cost of your knives.

best

I think I`m going to solve the issue by not doing any more custom designs.
